First word?

I know someone has posted this before, but it was a while ago and I can't find it....

What are you considering to by your child's first word?

Parker says da da and ma (rarely! And it's not in context to me yet...womp!) but he will also point to a banana and say nan or nana....not all the time but he has.

And lately I can ask him a question and he will say yea yea! It's cute, even though I'm not sure if he's really saying "yes".  Like... "Wanna go see daddy?"  "Yea yea" right on que.

I dunno, are you waiting for a more clear word?

Re: First word?

  • DS clearly says mama, especially when he wants to nurse. He can say dada too but says mama a lot more. I'm with him all day long so that is probably why though.

Our LO does a lot of noise making. He says "da da da da" and "ma ma ma ma" but I'm not sure it is on purpose quite yet. Sometimes he does it at my husband and I, but other other times just messing around in his crib when he gets up from his nap. So I think we are still waiting on our first real word.

He will mimic anything you say...but mostly right now because we have 3 dogs who are constantly barking at something our LO quite literally barks with them. He totally goes "woof." Yesterday we got home from the store and he could hear the dogs inside (we have a great dane, no need to say more about how loud he is) and he starting barking in the back seat...we couldn't even control ourselves!

  • Duck is her first on purpose word. My husband worked with her for a long time on that one, and to my surprise it worked. She's said it probably 75 times now. She also has said dog. There seems to be a theme here.

She says da da and mama a lot, but I don't think it's on purpose. Also, my favorite, is I got.

  • "Hi",  she figured this one out all on her own.  I heard her working on it in the car, and then she said it to me.  She uses is correct too.  She says "hi" to the animals whenever they come near her.  :)  Her second word was "Momma".

  • We didn't count mama or dada for either of the kids (as far as what I put in the baby book) because they started making that sound at like 6 months but I know they didn't associate them until later.

DS's first real word was dog - we were on a walk and he pointed and said it.  DD's first word was banana - I pulled one out for breakfast one day and she pointed and said nah-nana.

  • I don't think DS has any real words yet. He babbles a lot and will imitate sounds, but that is it. And like a PP's LO, he loves to "bark" when he hears our dogs barking.

  • DD says mama and dada, but everyone is mama and dada. The only word she uses in context is "uh oh".

  • I consider dada his first word. It was so clear when he said it and my H was holding him. It was so adorable and H was so proud.

He says mama very rarely. He's started saying yea yea and uh oh too. But I don't know if it's just sounds he's making or if he really understands what those words mean.

  • DD's first word was mama (in a context, not just babble). She has a small vocabulary: gimme, bye, want, and ball. She speaks Portuguese mostly, but says bye in both languages.

  • DS had alot of babble like dadadadada and bababa and rarely mama. His first real in context word would be yah yah which means duck in Chinese. We live by a lake and always go on walks and stop to watch the ducks and I always tell him what they are. One day he pointed to them himself and said yah yah.

Renee's first word was "Dada." She said it as plain as day while we were shopping at the health food store. It caught us both off guard. I was a little jealous... I'm not going to lie lol
