Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Best baby carrier for this age range

I currently have an ergo performance and DD is not a huge fan.  I think it's partly because she can't really see well. What carriers do you like or dislike and why? If your LO hated the ergo but liked a different carrier please share your experience. It is very difficult to take DD places because she screams so I'm willing to spend whatever it takes to help keep her happy.  We also plan to take a plane trip soon and need to find something she likes. I recently posted something similar on my BMB, but I'm hoping to get a little more feedback before I spend the money on a second carrier. Thanks!

  • I have an Ergo Performance and a Kinderpack in the infant size. I love the Kinderpack. It has an adjustable base so you can have feet out when they are little, straps are adjustable, the body isn't giant, and it's cute! When he turns a year old I'll be looking for a toddler sized one to replace it since the infant is only big enough till 15-18 months.

  • I have a moby, a k'tan, and a Boba. DS doesn't like the boba right now, he'll scream as soon as I start putting him in. He doesn't mind the Moby or K'tan right now. My sister (she's big into babywearing) said that maybe DS just likes the soft carriers right now and will enjoy the boba when he is bigger and able to see more in it.

I have a Bjorn that I bought at a consignment shop. DS likes it, but gets pretty hot in there quickly. I had a Poppy pouch that I used with DD when she was older. It's good as they get older and can sit up more and want to look around. I used it with her till probably about 18 mo or so when she didn't want to be contained anymore.

  • I have a Moby, Ergo and Boba. The Boba and Ergo are very similar but different in subtle ways. It has some cool features to it (like foot straps for older kids for a back carry). The pocket the baby sits in is a bit wider. My boy seems to be really comfortable in it.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm doing a giveaway with Boba (for 3 types of carriers) on my blog (in siggy) in case you want to try and win one to try it out. Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to go with. :)

  • Are you still using the infant insert? It might be the fit that bothers your LO. If they're too big for the insert but don't fill out the carrier well. My LO hasn't minded facing in. I have a chimparoo and I did back carry the other daywith my DH to put her in and watch her and she loved that. I still use the moby and ring sling, but she faces in with those too and likes them.

This morning we were at a street fair and I had DD in her Ergo - she was not happy at all!!  I ran back to the car to get her pacifier and switched her to the Baby Bjorn that we keep in there for quick trips and put her facing out.  She was a different baby and didn't need her pacifier!  I think she was hot in the Ergo and wanted to see what was going on.  When she is tired, the Ergo is great - I cover her with the little shade part and she will go to sleep - but when she wants to know what is happening she hates it!  I know it supposedly isn't good for their hips, but both my other kids were in the bjorn, too and seem fine.  I keep trying the ergo and ring sling, but will use the Bjorn when I have to!

  • I have the same Ergo and DS is hit or miss with it. He definitely hates it when I'm not walking. I also have a K'tan that he HATES. It makes him so sweaty! We have a Bjorne, but it kills my back. Plus, it's a crotch dangler so it's not good for babies' hips. We got it for free, and I'll wear it for 10 min here and there. He's fine facing out in it. Finally, we have a Sakura Bloom single layer linen ring sling that he likes the best. We do the facing in legs out hold and the forward facing kangaroo hold.

  • I'm a wrapper (woven wraps).  I had an ergo still from DS1 but DS2 hated it every time I tried it (didn't mind when DH wore it with him in it), I'm assuming it was because when I wore it the straps cut in front of his face.

I much prefer wrapping because I can do so many different things with one piece of cloth and that same piece of cloth can be used to carry either kid (DS1 is 3 so if we were more in to SSCs I'd have to have separate sizes for each kid).

  • I switched from the Ergo to the Baby Bjorn so DS can face out. He likes it better. The make a mesh one so it doesn't get as hot which is nice.

  • Do you put anything under her butt like the infant insert? DD can look out much easier if I roll up a little blanket under her or I'll take it out so she drops down a little if I want her to nap.
  • Thanks everyone! I've tried her in the ergo with just the pillow of the infant insert and with nothing. Maybe it's worth trying with the pillow again to give her a bit of a boost.

So many options. It's hard to choose what I'm going to buy as my second carrier.

  • I really like the baby Bjorn. I used it with DD2 today. It was a hand me down from my older sister. Dh uses it too.

I have the Beco Gemini, and LO loves it. It has a forward facing option but several other positions, as a PP mentioned. It's very supportive for baby and parent, and it's comfortable.
  • Can anyone compare the ergo with the becco gemini or the kinderpack?
