Burping at night

I can not usually get my LO to burp after he eats at night because he is pretty much fast asleep. The jiggling and patting I usually do to get him to burp only makes him more asleep. Once in a while after I put him down he will seem slightly uncomfortable, so I pick him back up and he is sound asleep again as soon as I begin the patting.

I asked his pedi about it and she said not to worry to much about making him burp because he probably eats slower at night and the breastmilk is creamier in the evening and night. But he does get pretty gassy as morning approaches, so I am wondering if I should be trying harder.

What do you all do?

Re: Burping at night

  • I really wouldn't worry about it. Babies don't always need to burp. And, they will burp if they need to sleeping or not. If you are worried about the gas, maybe try gas drops or gripe water.

  • I was wondering the same thing. I can't seem to get a burp out of LO at nifht either, and vy 4 or 5 in the morning he is grunting up a storm and seems bery gassy.

My two are the same way.  I used to be able to get burps out of them at night, and now I never can.  I still try for a few minutes with each, but ...nothing.  They are both spitting up less too, so I've wondered if their systems are starting to mature and they just don't need it.

  • I don't usually worry about it. If she needs to burp, she'll burp. I'll pat her for a few minutes, even if she is asleep. But if she doesn't burp, no big deal.

  • when DD was doing her MOTN feedings I never stressed. I fed, kept her upright for about 10 minutes with patting; this usually produced a burp but not always and she would crash right back out.  Unless your baby wakes up screaming each time, I wouldn't stress. Babies have gas no matter what we do-I swear my LO will burp 4-5 times between each feeding- between the burp afterwards, random burps when I pick her up/if shes doing tummy time and always a burp right after a nap when I get her!

  • My nurse in the hospital and pedi both told us breastfed babies don't need to be burped. I never burped DD. they don't take in as much air as a bottle fed baby. My DD could always let it rip out the other end, but we never had any major issues.
