De Quervains's

Has anyone had surgery for De Quervains Syndrome. I'm having it next week. What was it like? How was recovery? How long before you could lift your little one again?

Re: De Quervains's

  • Good luck! My DeQuervan's went away after a cortisone shot luckily but when I was at the doc's office getting the shot we discussed the possibility of surgery and the doc assured me it was pretty minor and not to be afraid. Hope yours goes well!

  • Not to scare you but..A hand specialist said I had it & I too was scheduled for surgery (the shot didn't work for me either).  My mom forced me to get another opinion simply b/c it was my right hand.  I went to another hand specialist in the same office & that dr said I didn't have it & that my similar problem would just go away within the year.  SO I had what I thought was DQ for a year, then another several months of pain & then poof it was gone & it's been years now.  I'm glad I didn't have that surgery.  Who would've thought a dr specializing in hands with a good rep didn't know what he was talking about??!  GL
  • Mine went away through extensive rehab and exercises. This included hot/cold therapy, electrotherapy, and heavy massage. I'm allergic to cortisone shots so that wasn't an option for me unfortunately. My case was really severe...could not move my hand at all or fingers without pain...and we were able to fix it without surgery. I would also recommend looking into getting a second opinion. I did however have wrist surgery for an entirely separate issue on my other wrist, a ganglion cyst. I know that's comparing apples to oranges but I was knocked out only a short time for a quick and easy surgery. It took a few months for the soreness to go away and about a year to work up to gaining my entire range of motion back.

I've had the surgery twice, once on each hand.  Both surgeries and recoveries were easy-peasy.  I think I was at the surgery place for about an hour, and was pretty much back about my normal life by that afternoon (though I didn't drive until at least the next day).  I have lovely matching scars on my wrists now.  In both cases, I think it was 6-8 weeks before the pain was completely gone and my wrist felt back to "normal."  I still have sort of weak wrists, though - scrubbing my tub, for example, is hard on my wrists, as is trying to read a big heavy book in bed.  Push ups and some yoga poses bother my wrists, too, unless I do them on my knuckles so I can keep my wrists straight.  That flat palm angle just hurts.

My first surgery was years ago, before DD was born, and it was my left hand (I'm right handed) so it was easier.  That was also a much, much worse case of de quervains, so the healing process seemed even easier, because I was just glad to have that debilitating pain gone!

I had my right hand done when DD was around 7 or 8 months old.  I think I was picking her up and carrying her around within a few days of the surgery, but awkwardly, because I wasn't supposed to be, I don't think.  Once the bandages were off and the stitches removed, it was easier.

Good luck!  I'm sure you'll be fine!
