Good morning! I was struck by how many of you grow your own veggies in last week's GTKY. This week's GTKY is not limited to veggies though, I'd LOVE to hear about what everyone is growing. Please participate even if you have a black thumb!
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers?
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)?
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow?
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place?
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs?
6) Any major gardening disasters?
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden?
Re: GTKY Monday - Gardening!
My dad tilled us up a big garden this year. I'm terrible at guesstimating sizes but it's got all kinds of veggies in it.
2 What do you grow flowers, veggies, trees, weeds?
We have carrots, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, jalapeos, tomatoes, basil, and squash.
3 What is/are your favorite plants to grow?
I love flowers. We usually plant some colorful stuff in pots around our house. With a baby this year we only have a couple of pots planted. They have geraniums and wave petunias in them.
4 How did you get into gardening in the first place?
We wanted to landscape our house which explains the flowers. We're growing veggies to make LO's baby food and bc you can't beat the taste!
5 How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden planting, watering, mowing, weeding, esp with young LOs?
DH is in charge of all that so I don't worry about it. I'll take care of LO while he takes care of the garden.
6 Any major gardening disasters?
Not yet but this is our first year to have one so we'll see.
7 Your most detested pests/insects in your garden?
Japanese beetles!!
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers?
I have a gorgeous outdoor raised veggie garden that MH built. It's U shaped, with the two sides being 10' and the middle 6', and each segment 3 foot wide, if that makes sense. I also have some containers in the back yard too.
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)?
We mostly grow veggies. I also have a mandarin orange tree and a blood orange tree. I have a container of Easter lilies that MH's uncle gave me last year before he passed away, that we replanted the bulbs and they are now blooming this year. And we have bushes and small flowers in the front yard, but nothing special.
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow?
My favorites are the veggies. I just love walking out in the garden and planning my meal around what looks good.
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place?
I really have no idea. MH just decided to build this garden, so we started gardening.
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs?
It's really hard. The garden isn't what it used to be before E. It especially got left behind when I was pg and MH was traveling all the time. MH does the bulk of the hard work.
6) Any major gardening disasters?
I had a single caterpillar eat an entire jalapeno plant. I saw it one day, but couldn't kill it myself. I thought it would be okay until the next day when MH returned. When I went out to check on it, there was nothing left but a stick.
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden?
See above - caterpillars!

Surprise, our 2nd daughter P was born 5/22/14!
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers? We have a large yard and will create a garden for me in the future, I'd say it will be about 2X4
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)? We will try veggies, tomatoes, cucmbers, green beans and maybe lettuce and potatoes?
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow? tomatoes, I love fresh native tomatoes in the summer
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place? my dad always had one growing up, it is a good way to save some money too
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs? haven't yet
6) Any major gardening disasters? killed a rhodadendrun at our old condo
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden? we have moles so I'm not sure how that will affect a future garden, we have to find a way to get rid of them now.
IVF#3 brought us our miracle baby girl on June 26, 2012
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers?
We are renters in a condo, so even though we have a small front yard, we don't do anything there. I grow everything in pots.
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)?
Non-edibles include: a family of jade plants (the "shrek ears" variety), armadillas, x'mas cactus, day lillies. Edibles include cherry tomatoes, and a variety of herbs. And some flowering annuals.
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow?
Anything that I can eat!
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place?
I had a BLACK thumb for the longest time. My MIL is huge on gardening (she grows mostly flowers) and got me interested. I'm still very much a newbie, and I look forward to having my own yard/garden in the future.
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs?
We don't do anything in the winter so it's now all new to me since M's been born. Just watering the plants in the morning has been challenging! DH does most of the weeding. Our neighbor mows the little patch of front lawn for us (that's included in our rental contract).
6) Any major gardening disasters? Not my own disaster, but when we first moved here, during mid-late summer, we kept getting STINKHORNs coming out of the mulch around the condo! They STINK and attract flies, and they look like orange penises! YUCK. (google it and you'll know what I mean!) Not only I had to keep digging them out (3-4 would sprout every morning), I also had to dig down into the soil to get rid of their "eggs." Luckily we didn't have much last summer.
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden? I HATE squirrels. They dig the plants out of the pots in the Spring, and they pick my tomatoes in the summer. Note: they pick the tomatoes, take one bite, them throw them away. And on to the next tomato. C'mon, if you're going to pick the tomato, at least have the courtesy to eat the whole thing!!!

Our IVF miracle, Baby Boy M, arrived on 11/8/2012!
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers?
DH built a raised garden this year, I think it's 12'x4' or something close to that.
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)?
Veggies and a couple of herbs, next year he's going to build a smaller raised garden strictly for herbs.
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow?
Veggies - squash, corn, and peppers. Those always come out the best for us and are so good! Flowers - I love my Indian Hawthorn and Purple Lantana
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place?
DH decided to try it one year and hasn't looked back since. Every year it gets bigger and this year he's going to try a fall garden
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs?
The veggie garden is all DH. He tends to it when he gets home from work but since it's a raised garden, there's not much to do other than watering. The flower garden in the front yard has taken a backseat though. I was the one constantly weeding it last year, but I don't have the time this year.
6) Any major gardening disasters?
The first year we had our veggie garden, DH didn't get any good soil, just top soil on top of our very dry/rocky soil and a lot of it died out before any veggies came up.
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden?
Grasshoppers, always eating everything.

As much as I would LOOOOVE to grow my own veggies and herbs, I suck and am too lazy to learn about how to do so. Plus we have a rabbit living under our shed, so I don't feel like dealing with that.
Jealous of all you gardening ladies!
We elected to take a one year break from the garden due to J's arrival. The watering takes about 30min/night and it is just too much right now! So I'm answering from the last four years since we bought our house.
1) How much gardening space do you have? Anyone, like me, don't have a garden but grow in containers? We have raised beds that came with the house. Roughly 50x3. Containers dont do well here - too hot.
2) What do you grow (flowers, veggies, trees, weeds)?
Orange and lime trees. Then summer : tomato, zucchini, varieties of melons, cucumbers, squash, loads of peppers, and herbs. We've tried corn twice, but with no success (ears are too dry). Winter: lettuce galore, snow peas, sugar snap peas, carrots, scallions, garlic (fail), I think that is all
3) What is/are your favorite plants to grow? Tomatoes! Super easy and they taste amazing!
4) How did you get into gardening in the first place? My friend Liz
5) How/When do you find the time to tend to your garden (planting, watering, mowing, weeding), esp with young LOs? As stated above we are taking a break.
6) Any major gardening disasters? Yes! I planted arugula. It was great, but DH didn't like it, nbd, but it keeps coming back!
7) Your most detested pests/insects in your garden? Due to flood irrigation, citrus, and some uncut palms, I occasionally find cockroaches in the garden - gross!
