My LO has a really bad cold, started as a stuffy nose last Monday, took him to the ped and she said his ears and throat looked alright. He's gotten worse this weekend, he's been waking up crying in the middle of the night which is not like him at all and also has a bad cough now. So anyway its Sunday so I had to just take him to the local Urgent Care, doc there said his ears are still okay for now but he gave us a prescription for Zithromax. I'm always wary of meds. Has anyone else had this antibiotic prescribed for their LO and how old were they? Any reactions? TIA
Re: Zithromax (antibiotic)
2. Even if it were an ear infection or a sinus infection, Zithromax is FAR from being first line treatment. Standard is Amoxicillin, unless a kid has had repeated infections that are now PROVEN to be resistant.
This is why I seriously judge the quality of medical providers at Urgent Care. They practice medicine outside the recommended guidelines of the AAP and ACOFP because they know people want "treated." At best, it's bad form. At worst, it's damaging the health of all Americans by contributing to serious antibiotic resistance.
