Wedding Ring... When to stop wearing it.

Wedding Ring... When to stop wearing it.

I am only 21 weeks but my fingers do swell a bit more than normal. I take off my ring occasionally. My DH didn't believe it was a pregnancy thing so I googled it for him.

When have you had to take off the wedding ring? Did you buy a fake to put in its place?

Re: Wedding Ring... When to stop wearing it.

  • Everyone is different.  I made it to 32ish weeks with DS....last time I managed to stuff my wedding band on was for my shower at 33 weeks.  I took them off for good when they started hurting me at night, because I had a LOT of swelling in the legs and that water weight would disperse throughout my body while I slept, making my rings painful by the time I woke up.

  • Its different for everyone. With dd1, in had to take of my engagement ring and my other two rings on my right hand, but could keep both my wedding bands on because they were a full size bigger. With dd2, I never had to take any of them off.

This time, I've noticed some swelling when I go for walks or something, but it always goes down, so not an issue yet.

If I had to take off ALL my rings, I would want to get a fake, even if it was just a 10 dollar one!

  • It seems to vary a lot -- if your fingers are swelling such that they are tight (and don't go down when you drink more water), it's probably time.  Mine still fits, so it hasn't been an issue; i don't know whether i will get a replacement, but if i do, i'll probably opt for a simple silver band.

  • It's getting warmer and I've noticed I'm swelling more. My engagement ring has a thinner band and I can't wear it anymore. I have been able to wear my thicker wedding band tho

  • I had to stop wearing mine at 12 weeks. Yeah, I started early. I didn't buy any to replace it, although sometimes I wish I had. I really miss wearing them. I have them on a chain and I wear them sometimes, but I'm so scared that the chain will break or I'll lose them somehow.

  • I wore them the whole time with DD (born 41w3d), BUT I had her in May and so I skipped the hot summer months. Things may not be the same this time around. It's been so far so good, but NJ has had a pretty cool spring this year. I'm waiting to see what happens when things heat up a little. :-)

My fingers swell anyway in the summer so I am anticipating having to stop wearing them sooner than later with a summer pregnancy. My plan is to get a cheap wedding band look alike to feel totally comfortable.

  • Mine still fits for now , but my husband said he is going to buy me a nice chain so I can where it once they no longer fit.

  • I think it really varies from person to person and what season you are pregnant in.   I still have them on now, but I think they may be coming off in the next month.  With M they made it to 8 mo.  I don't worry about getting a fake ring.  I'm not a big jewelry person to begin with andI don't really give a sht about what other people think.  Anyone who gets judgey about a pregnant not wearing a wedding ring is an idiot since most women take off their rings at some point.   I also don't consider having a baby unmarried to be shameful or anything like that so that might color my feelings about it.

I never took them off last time but DS was born in February. This time I have been slightly swollen on hot days. My wedding ring is skinny and will probably fit for a long time. If not I'll buy something at target or somewhere else cheap.

  • Everyone is different- but with DS I wore it all the way until the day he was born. I never swelled until after giving birth. With this baby, so far so good- but it's going to be so hot during the summer and being 7/8 months pregnant might make things interesting. If so, I will just take it off and put it in a safe place.

  • I haven't needed to take mine off for any pregnancy. I would definitely take it off though if you notice your fingers swelling to the point where it's difficult to get them off. Don't want to have to them off!

This. My fingers swell a bit in summer anyway, and I took mine off last week...when I tried to take it off before a shower and noticed it wouldn't hardly budge. That freaked me out, so when I got it off fifteen minutes later after using dish soap and water, I just left it off. Not sure yet if I'll get something cheap to wear instead. I do feel a bit lost without it.
  • I will take it off when my "less swollen" times still give me tight rings. I ditched my promise ring because it was already a little tight so it was getting bad.

There's not a set week... I just go by "if its tight all the time... take it off"

I have not decided if I will replace my ring once it comes off. I haven't decided... If I worked with people I totally would

  • I read this while I was on mobile and asked Russ about this. I just got my ring resized like a year ago and lately, along with my ankles, my fingers and hands swell. He said since it would be such a short period of time that I would go without it he doesnt care. I wasnt too impressed by that answer!

I told him I was glad he is ok with me running around (errand wise) without my wedding ring on and it was like he saw the light and said that I should just get one for the just in case situation.

But I will agree with some of the other ladies, it depends on how well you handle things. I have never been in my late second and third tri during the summer months so I havent had to deal with it that often.

  • I wore them my whole pregnancy but I was pregnant through the winter last time. I might not be so lucky this time around.

Mine are off. I actually found a funny little set at Claire's which was 10 dollars and it looks semi real! I miss mine but its not worth having them cut off if my swelling didn't go down

With DS I wore mine all the way up until the end - including to the hospital.  I never had any issues with swelling.  I'm just over 25 weeks now and still fine so I'm hoping they last the entire time this time as well.

  • So far so good for me, and I tend to swell in the warmer months. It's just now starting to get warm here (kicked on the A/C for the first time yesterday) so we'll see how long that lasts.

I have a few replacement ring sets pinned from Overstock and QVC. I'm a jewelry whore and I know I'd go BSC not wearing rings. Besides, my rings are a symbol of my committment to DH -- I know how I'd feel if he didn't wear a ring and I don't want him to feel that way if I wasn't wearing rings (not that he'd feel that way, but that's just how the logic works in my mind).

  • I never had to take it off with DD.  I didn't have any swelling.  Being a summer pregnancy this time, it may be a different situation. I have a silver thin CZ band that I wear when I'm swimming, at the beach, doing dirty work, etc. and that may fit a little longer.  I always like to wear a substitution band.  I feel naked without a ring on my hand.

I feel like I made it longer in my last pregnancy, maybe closer to 30 weeks. This time around, my rings are already off. All it took was one hot weekend and I had a hard time getting them off at the end of the day. They still fit, but are uncomfortable for me now, so I will leave them off till the end of my pregnancy (I was able to easily slip my rings on as soon as I got home from the hospital last time around).

I am wearing my mother's wedding band now, which I usually wear on my right hand. If I didn't have that to wear, I think it would be fun to get an inexpensive set to wear instead, just to change things up. Last time around, I didn't wear anything as a replacement.

  • Ug... I just had to have mine cut off last week. Very traumatic. I advise you take them off if they start to feel tight. Apparently this pregnancy swelling can be no joke.

  • I live in Arizona so I am assuming that some time during the summer I won't be able to wear it but I am actually waiting to take it off so I can take it in to get it soddered together (my engagement ring sits in my wedding band wrap). I don't want to part with it but I think that since I eventually won't be able to wear it I might as well get it fixed. I am thinking of just getting a plain band to wear while I can't wear my normally ring.
