Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

how to fly with toddler and car seat

So I am traveling alone with my soon to be 18 month old.  I will require a car seat when I get to my destination.  In the past we always gate checked our car seat, but have never flown without my husband.  I cant quite fathom getting my child in a stroller, our carry-on tote bag and a car seat through security to the gate my own.  I have read horrible reviews on the carts they make that you strap the car seat to. So how in the world do you make it work?

Re: how to fly with toddler and car seat

  • I strapped the car seat TO the rolling carry-on bag. I don't remember exactly how I did it, but it worked. I've checked the car seat as a checked bag, too - you shouldn't have to pay for it. Just get a bag to put it in so it doesn't get too banged up. I used one of the red drawstring "gate check" bags that they have at BRU, even though it was a checked bag instead of gate checked.

I just noticed you said that your carry on is a tote bag - my suggestion obviously wouldn't work with that. I just think rolling suitcases are easier to deal with.

  • We had a horrible experience with checking a car seat last time we flew.  It never arrived at our destination! So we wont be going that route again.

The problem is I am not taking a rolling bag.  I am only taking a small tote bag to hold some snacks and diapers for the plane!

  • If it were me, I would just ask a worker at the security gate for assistance with the bulkier items like the car seat and the stroller. Maybe a good samaritan will help you get through... I know I would! I think if you hang the tote on the stroller and then get one of those carseat bags that allows you to carry the carseat backpack style, you might be OK.

  • Does your LO walk?  I put the carseat and my carry-on in the stroller and had LO on a backpack leash.  It was so easy and she loves her monkey backpack.

  • Do not check your carseat- it is considered damaged as if it were in an accident.

  • I've only travelled with DH, but this method would work solo too. We have a carseat bag with backpack straps, and we always wear our guy in the airport (ergo). So theoretically you'd have the carseat on your back, the toddler on your front, and 2 hands free for whatever you need.

  • There is a rolling cart that you can strap your carseat to. Then you put your child in it and wheel it through the airport to your gate.
