what carrier should I get?

I know it's early but I'm a nanny and have worn the newborn I watch in the sling his mom provided. I have pretty bad back problems and the sling is just killing me! Can you recommend a carrier that isn't too hard on your back and would work for a newborn and up?

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm asking for my future baby Smile

Re: what carrier should I get?

  • My favorite for a newborn that lasts for a long while is a mei tai. There are budget brands (Infantino Wrap and Tie), and then there are other brands that are somewhat higher quality and prettier (Babyhawk, Freehand, Kozy). It's a two-shoulder carrier, and I find it very easy to learn to use.

As fare as your nanny job goes, I'd look and see if there's a babywearing group in your city that could show you how to adjust and wear the sling you've got. Small changes can be a big difference in comfort. Alternately, if you buy something you like, you can always use it at work instead I'm sure. Take that baby with you shopping and see what you like!

If you have back problems, I'd suggest a Beco Gemini. The straps cross in the back (if you are wearing baby on your front) and I think it works well for weight distribution. You also don't need an infant insert for it. I wish I had had mine when she was much smaller, but we had a Moby instead (which I hated).

  • I have a kinderpack that can be adjusted for a newborn on up if you get the infant size. I like it a lot. Super comfy. I think it's more comfortable than my Ergo. Plus it's super cute with all the different fabrics out there.

  • I used a Sleepy Wrap (now called a Boba wrap) with my kids as newborns. It's a stretchier material as a Moby, and worked well until they were about 15-20 lbs. I love love love the Beco Butterfly, which I used as soon as they were big enough. hth and congrats!

  • I use a huggaloops snuggle sling. It's similar to the baby k'tan in that it's more of a wrap than a sling, but you just slip it on, there's a loop for your waist and you crisscross the other two on your shoulders. It's good from birth to 35lbs. My son loves it, and it's especially good when he's cranky and won't sleep.

I feel the same way.  I love my mei tai.
