Labial adhesions and awful pedi visit.

So today we went to the new pedi since we have moved for DD's 2 year visit and I hated the whole thing. Office staff was rude and unfriendly not at all what I would expect from an office that deals with children all day! The pedi was also awful. Not very thorough and basically scared the crap out of me.

Now on to the labial adhesion thing, apparently DD has this? Dr. said it could have just occurred but I've never seen it so I guess it must have. Anyone have any experience with this? She said it was a pretty long one in that it was almost to her urethra but not blocking it. When I asked her what causes it she said just stickyness and being a moist area....or sexual abuse trauma!...then she asked me if I thought that could be a possibility!! I was just sick to my stomach that she made the thought even cross my freaking mind...but really?? ! So far I haven't read anywhere that that is a cause of it, but seriously it just seemed a little extreme and really upset me. Needless to say we won't be using that office again.

Any suggestions on what to do for the adhesions? She suggested vasoline and if they don't re-open we would have to put estrogen cream on it. I've never heard of this before so any advice, thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Labial adhesions and awful pedi visit.

  • DD1 had a labial adhesion around 9-12 months. Our pedi just said use vaseline with every diaper change and it should clear up on it's own. It did clear up by her next well visit. She said it's very common in little girls, and never mentioned anything about sexual abuse.

  • It's very common, and some girls are more prone to it than others, according to my pedi -- who never said anything about a connection to sexual abuse.

DD1 has never had one, but DD2 has had them repeatedly and we've done like 4-5 rounds of steroid cream over the past two years. Vaseline wasn't enough. As soon as we got one open, it would stay that way for a few weeks or a couple of months and then start closing again. It has gotten better as she's gotten older.

  • DD had one at her 6mo appointment.  We were told it's common and due to them not producing estrogen yet.  We did the estrogen cream because hers was a pretty big adhesion.  It took 10 days for it to open back up.  She still has a tiny adhered spot, but short of constant use of the estrogen cream nothing keeps it completely open so we're leaving it alone and only using Aquaphor if it starts to get worse.

  • My pedi also says they're common and totally normal for some girls. She's never once mentioned sexual abuse.

My pedi also said that because DD clearly has enough space to urinate without causing a problem she sees no reason to interfere and that it will clear up on its own as she matures and produces estrogen.

  • Thank you ladies so much! Hearing your experience made me feel a lot better about it, think we will try the vasaline and see if that helps!

  • DD had it at around 5-6 months. Used an estrogen cream and it cleared right up. There are non-hormonal treatments as well (like pp's said, vaseline, etc.).

  • They can be common in girls, but they can also be caused from trauma.  I know she upset you, but she wouldn't be a good pediatrician if she didn't address that.  Adhesions anywhere on the body can be caused by trauma, but they aren't always.  Hope that makes sense.  If you didn't like her office or her, then definately don't go back, but don't think she was inappropriate to mention this to you.  She probably just wants you to be aware of all the ways it is possible to get them since you asked about it.
