Ladies with Pixie Cuts/Short Hair

I've been growing my hair out for as long as I can remember and I just really need a change. I cut and donated 11 inches over the summer but haven't had it cut since Embarrassed so of course it's become a shaggy and unhappy hair cape.

I've always wanted to cut it all off, like really REALLY cut it off, but I don't know if I have the stones to do it. I'm worried that I'll hate it after a few days and will spend the next three years trying to grow it out. I'm thinking of something like these styles, but have a feeling they're a lot more work than what they seem:

Those of you with short hair - do you love it? I guess this post is less of me asking a question and more of me wanting someone to pat me on the head and tell me to stop being such a wuss. Mostly I think I'm coming to the realization that if I don't want to look frumpy, I'm going to need to start blow-drying my hair with something other than the dashboard air conditioner vents.

Re: Ladies with Pixie Cuts/Short Hair

  • I loved my short hair when I was thinner. I've been tempted to cut it but my face is so round right now. It took like 4 years to grow back out to the length I like. If you do it and hate it I can recommend someone for extensions!

  • I had mine cut into a Natalie Portman pixie 2 years ago I loved it but it is a lot of maintenance to keep it looking nice. My hair is shoulder length already.
  • My hair was super short in college an I loved it! It was soooo easy to maintain. Right now, I keep it about chin length or longer but I am not opposed to chopping it off in the near future. Go for it!

You can try out hairstyle on you here.

I have been as short as a pixie and as long as mid-back.   I think shorter hair looks nicer but I have to say really short cuts can be more time consuming especially if you have unruly thick straight hair like mine.  I'm a wash and wear kind of girl and I can't do that with super short hair, I guess I'm lazy.

  • OP I laughed at the "dashboard air conditioner vents" because that is me more often than not. My hair has been about shoulder length for just about my whole adult life. I cut it into a shorter stacked bob (sort of like what Cyrstal posted) but I don't get my hair cut often often to keep up with it so it just grew up. I'm all about short hair and I say go for it -- but a short style can require more frequent cuts to keep it looking nice. I'm back to chin-ish length with layers and side bangs and it kinda does a little flipped out thing when I blow dry it.

  • I have something similar to the Keira Knightly picture.  It's a ton of work to maintain.  It's not really wash and wear,  that being said it is pretty versatile when you go to style it.

  • You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for your short hair wisdom - I think I'm going to do it! I really like the pictures you all have posted and I think I'm going to try what you suggested Crystal - something that's short but not *too* short so I don't have to do the neck shave thing. Even though it's potentially more work, I think I need to try something that sort of forces me to blow dry and get regular hair cuts. I had my hair cut when I was about 8 weeks pg with DS and then again last August. So, yeah. I need to take the leap into self hygiene so why not do it with my balls out?

In any case, if I hate it I'm definitely hitting you up for the hair extension recommendation, Lopes!

  • I usually keep my hair on the shorter side though I had gotten really lazy about getting it cut and it had gotten kind of long for me. I can say having shorter hair forces me to take the time to blow dry it using at least a round brush instead of letting it air dry like I was doing when it was longer. I just got it cut into an A line bob with the front just above my shoulders. I've had the cut for a week now and still like it.
  • I love it until about a week or two before my haircut. Then, I tell myself I'm going to grow it out but I always end up keeping it short.

The cuts you put up are gorgeous but they will probably take some time and effort to maintain.

How close are you to your stylist? Can you send her some pics of what you want to do ahead of time? That way, she can let you know if it will work with your hair and offer suggestions ahead of time. She can also block out extra time for your cut.

Confession time: I don't have a stylist. I had one back home (1.5 hrs away) who I started seeing in HS, but I get my hair cut so infrequently (aka once every 18mos to 2 years...yikes) that I don't really have a repertoire with anyone specific. I've been studying Yelp reviews and asking coworkers for stylist recommendations because I want to find someone local in order to actually make regular appointments and keep up with the style. It would probably be prudent to establish that relationship now before making the big cut, but I'm so sick of having long hair that I'm just ready to get it over with.

I think recommendations from friends are great. When you call to make the appointment, just let the stylist know that you're going for a big change and you'll probably need a little extra time for a consultation before and styling lessons after. That way, she won't book someone right after you and she won't be rushed.

That is a fantastic suggestion, thank you! I wouldn't have even thought to mention it being a big change and I'll definitely need him/her to show me what to do with it when I get home.

  • For the record, none of these are pixie cuts! I usually have a pixie-ish style and the maintenance is a breeze. Dunk my head under water and go. Sometimes a barrette to keep my bangs from drying funky.

Right now my hair is long (for me) and I hate it because it takes longer than 45 seconds to style. I'm headed back in to have her cut more off soon.

  • Check out Envy Salon on Old Columbia Pike. I love Maria but all the ladies there are great! They're a little pricey but they're really small and personable. If you go on a Tuesday they have martinis! If you do decide to go up there let me know and I'll make sure they take good care if you.
  • Thanks to this post I totally got my hair cut impulsively this afternoon. I was trying to grow it out but I just couldn't take it anymore. I read this post this morning, and after lunch with DH and N I drove by this bargain haircuts place. I NEVER do that. I always go to the same stylist and she's awesome but it takes awhile to get in and I just REALLY wanted my hair cut. I went in, there was like nobody in there and N sat on my lap while some random chick cut my hair. It's short and cute and so much better now. ;) Thanks for the inspiration RubySue and company!

That's awesome! I recently did this too. I had my hair cut short and needed bangs trimmed but just decided to get it chopped. My style is similar to the Michelle Williams cut in rubysues post. I'd post a pi but I'm on my phone. I get so many more compliments with short hair.

I posted this exact picture the a few months ago and asked if it looked like an old lady cut and the majority of people said it did. I got it anyway.

  • Well, I decided to go for it and chopped it all off.  I know this is going to sound really silly, but it was SO liberating! I had hair down to my butt in August '12 and it feels so good to have free range use of my neck again.

Lopes, I wish I had checked back on this post before I made the appointment and left work. I ended up going to Looks in Oakland Mills and had an awesome experience BUT I am totally going to hit-up your recommendation to check out Envy. Maybe we can have some sort of Baltimore ladies meet-up on a Tuesday afternoon for manicures and martinis? WinkDrinks

Latte - congrats on the chop, girl! Sometimes the spontaneous ideas are the best ones and when you know you need a change, you just KNOW.  I bet it looks awesome!

Psh I don't think it looks old lady. I think it all depends on the person. People always tell me it looks young and flirty.

It looks great!! I had short hair in my early 20s and loved it. I think now with all my wrinkles it would age me though. It does make you look younger though!

  • Short pixe cuts are in this summer and dyeing your hair any color red also is in. I had my hair cut in a pixe cut many times. But never dye red, I'm going to do it red this time. Summer 2013 great for any age.
