Reflux Momma's of 9mo+ babies come in...

Mobile:  Reflux Momma's of 9mo+ babies come in..

At DS's 9 month appointment, our ped recommended starting to reduce his reflux meds.  He was/is taking Prilosec/Omeprazole.  At his 9 month appointment, his dosage was 4mL bid, which hadn't been increased since 7ish months.. ped said since we haven't upped it at all, we were already beginning to wean him, and since we weren't noticing issues, she said we could try weaning him more.

So, for the past month we've dropped down to 3mL bid.  We've noticed a lot of "changes" in DS, which we were constantly chalking up to other things.. but, today it dawned on me that I think it's gotta be the reflux again.. here's what I'm seeing..

Eating.. particularly solids.. DS used to eat food like it was his JOB.  He loved to eat.  But, all month, eating has been torture.  He does great the first 5 minutes, but then the whole rest of breakfast/lunch/dinner is a screaming fit.  If we're giving him strictly a puree, sometimes he'll fight you less.. but, even that still is challenging.. And, the thing is, he's definitely hungry.. because, he'll scarf down a few bites in between screaming.  I thought maybe it was teething related, but it seems to be every single day, not just on days when his teeth are appearing to bother him...

Arching.. he's back to arching at random times.. when he's pitching a fit, he's throwing himself backwards again.. we see this a lot when I put him in his carseat in the car.. so, it's hard for me to know if this is reflux related, or if it's just typical infant throwing a tantrum not wanting to go in the car seat, ya know?

The last thing, and what really has me thinking it's reflux.. he's back to sounding congested all the time in his throat.  This was one of the hallmark signs from when he was a baby.  The first week I noticed it, he had a little bit of a cold too so I chalked it up to that.. but he's been snot free for over a week now and every time he's drinking a bottle I can hear what sounds like congestion in his throat..

We're going to go back to giving him the 4mL 2x/daily and see if that helps.. but, just curious when you ladies started to wean off of reflux meds and what you think about the things I've posted.. sound like a reflux issue again?  It's just so strange to see him SO unhappy with food.. from 6-9 months when he was eating solids, he'd EAT so much I'd often be the one stopping him because I knew he HAD to have had enough!! So, now to fight with him every single meal is just so off..

TIA!!

  • My LO's older, but we didn't have any of those issues when we weaned him off of the same meds your LO is taking.  We weaned around 10m.  We could have done it earlier, but we were traveling at the time.  It was a smooth transition.  It sure sounds like your LO still has a reflux issue and that you should talk to his doctor about it.

  • The same thing happened to us at his 6 month appointment, we were able to wean for 3 weeks and then it dawned on me. Hudson was showing all the signs your little one is showing and he was just miserable. We put him back on it and have decided that we are leaving him on it until at least his 1st birthday. Once his 1st birthday rolls around we'll see how things are going and maybe attempt to wean him off then.
