Success after IF

LURKER From IF Weight and IVF

So, I'm getting ready to start our first IVF. I am about 10-15 pounds heavier than I would like to be (which is still over what the BMI suggests) I'm 5'10 and around 225. I've always been a bigger girl, big bones etc.

Does weight and a successful IVF have a huger correlation?  I don't want to spend all that money and it not work because I'm "too fat." Can anyone give me some advice, please?

Re: LURKER From IF Weight and IVF

  • My RE told me that although weight may impact success, it's only to a small degree and you'd have to weigh the time it would take you to lose the weight and your eggs getting older, etc. with how much benefit it might be.  Then he went on to say that he sees overweight women get pregnant all the time and also sees women of perfect weight have unsuccessful cycles.  His advice to me was push forward.  I'm probably 50 pounds over where a medical chart would tell me to be, and 30 pounds over where I'd like to be.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Thank you!! I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'd realistically would like to loose 30 pounds as well, but it's not going to happen in 4 weeks! Weight is something I've struggled with my entire life! I've learned to embrace it, and at this point, I have the attitude of, I have enough to worry about, my weight isn't one of them. (Bad I know, but it's the truth) Thanks for weighing in...pun intended! :)

  • Like itsmekvb said, it can be a factor, but it is much smaller in comparison to egg quality, sperm, hormone levels, etc. Did your RE indicate concern about your weight?

I would avoid trying to crash diet to drop weight going into a treatment cycle. However, if you focus instead on healthy food and protein you fuel your body with good nutrition needed to support pregnancy.

Sorry you are having to take the IVF path, IF sucks. Good luck with your cycle!

  • No, my RE is very sweet and has never eluded to my weight! It's just my own guilty conscience! However, my previous OBGYN (whom I fired) told me if I lost 20 pounds I'd get pregnant a lot easier!! Pshhh That's funny doc, cause my tubes were blocked!! Idiot!

Ok, sorry didn't mean to go off on a rant. :)

I will be doing ER on June 30th, so I'm going to make very healthy choices between now and then!!

Ditto (except for the pounds, I'm heavier!).  My RE's have never said anything about my weight and chances of conception.  Sperm and now my age are the issues!  Good luck!

I am only 5'4" and a few pounds heavier than you and I had no trouble with our first IVF. I know weight can be a factor but just wanted to give you a success story :)
