Newborn nasal congestion

My DS is 2 weeks old and sounds stuffy. Sometimes it sounds bad when he is crying. He snorts and sound like a little piglet. He doesn't have any fluids coming out of his nose. What have you mommies done for congestion?

Re: Newborn nasal congestion

  • I am having the exact same issue. I have used the bulb syringe to try and get it out, and it helps some, but not much. I'm a FTM so not sure if I'm just not very good with the bulb syringe or what. The pediatrician just saw her yesterday though and her lungs are ok. Sorry I'm not much help but just wanted to agree that it's driving me crazy!

  • We were told by our pediatrician to spray saline spray up our son's nose and then suck out the snot with a nasal aspirator. Graco makes an amazing electronic asporator that sucks the snot out for you instead of using the bulb syringes that hardly work. You can get the Graco aspirator at Babies R Us or on Amazon it is 19.99 and the extra tips buy them bc you will need the littlest tip for a small baby are 3.99. Our friends turned us onto this amazing product and it is now my go to baby shower gift bc it works amazingly!

  • Not much you can do other then saline spray and you can use the bulb they have at the hospital...we got to take ours home...or I keep hearing how great the nosefrida is for this. We also have a humidifier in the room with us and that seems to help.

  • My pediatrician told me to not do anything unless she's in respiratory distress, she can't sleep or she's having difficulty eating. Too much suctioning can cause swelling and bleeding. When we need to suction, we put a few drops of saline in each nostril and use the nosefrida to suck it out. My daughter has been going into respiratory distress once a day, and this clears out her nose perfectly so she can breathe again.

all of this. We let The congestion clear on its own. But we use saline and nosefrieda when needed.

Definitely use saline drops and either nosefrida or bulb syringe from hospital. In early days it can be due to the delivery and not getting all the fluid out while getting squeezed through birth canal. If you had a csection or a speedy vaginal birth you will notice it more.
  • I used saline drops and the bulb syringe. Our pedi told us not to use it too often though because it can aggravate swelling in their little noses and make the sound even worse.

As with pp, my pediatrician said its best to let it resolve on its own unless causing issues.  He also said not to use humidifier quite yet (LO is 3 weeks) as it can cause more harm then good. I plan on asking him at our 1 mo appointment next steps as LO still has the congestion.

Nosefrida. At first I was skeptical but it was worth a shot. I ordered and didn't look back. It's amazing! You get so much out!! Just buy it and buy some extra filters. You won't get boogers in your mouth, promise!
