we've just recently started giving DD water, but maybe only an ounce or two. In the past we've had to give DD an ounce or two of pear juice for constipation.
My pedi told us to start giving DS water at his 6 month appointment. He said filtered, tap water was preferable (you want them to get some fluoride for tooth development) and nothing more than 2-3 oz total per day. Like food, it's mostly just practicing with a cup at this point. DS loves his straw cup though. He gets soaked, but he has so much fun figuring it out.
We have used prune juice and apple juice sparingly for constipation. About 2 ounces diluted. I just got out the sippy cup today so I will start putting an ounce or two in that. Not she he will get any actually in his mouth though ::mobile smiley::
We started with water in a cup at 6 months. Now at almost 9 months I still only give her water in a cup and offer it at all times. Since the weather is getting much warmer, I want her to know that she will have it around if she needs it between bottles.

we've been working on my son with water since he started solids. we barely get him to take an ounce. Mil has better luck, I might get him to take half ounce if i'm lucky. I've started putting it in a sippy cup.
as for juices. I'm not going to start those yet. unless needed for constipation of course. he's a big kid, I'd rather him just work on fruits instead of the juices.

We started a sippy with water when DS was around 6 months. He wouldn't get much at all for the first couple months. It was really just practicing sippy cups. I will probably wait a little longer with DD just because she didn't catch on to solids as well as DS did. I will give her some time to master that first. We didn't give juice until her was much older.
