? about c-sections

So, I was told I have to have a RCS (due to being 29 weeks the last c-section go-round and the scar is high on my uterus -- a weak point).  Anyway, at how many weeks do they typically schedule a c-section?  39? 38? 37?

DH and I were perusing the calendar .... and we were giggling at certain dates.  I will be 40 weeks 1/1, 39 weeks 12/25, 38 weeks 12/18.  Anyway ... he wants Friday the 13th, which would put me in week 37.  Our daughter's birthday is 10/16 .... so I thought it would be super fun to have a 12/16 birthday, which would be almost 38 weeks.

I know it's early yet to be thinking about these things ... but it's kind of fun to dream.

I would assume they schedule it for 40 weeks. Why would you want to risk any preterm complications by scheduling it earlier?

My doctor schedules them around 39 weeks, but no earlier unless there is a real medical need.

D/t prior history (full on eclampsia -- passed out in seizure with bp of 250/200 and an emergency c-section that they full on knocked me out for), I'm thinking he absolutely will not let me go to 40 weeks.

I've been told that they schedule it two weeks prior to your due date because there's a chance you could go into natural labor early

That's kind of what I was told by others .... so that fits!

My scheduled c-section with DS2 was at 39 weeks 1 day.  They usually schedule it before 40 weeks because they don't want you to go into labor on your own.  They usually don't schedule for earlier than 39 weeks unless medically necessary.  Your baby needs to stay in for as long as possible.  Also, I was just told my date, I didn't get to pick it.

Are they monitoring you closely this time around?

Most definitely.  I already did a 24 hour urine test so they could monitor the protein in my urine.  And I'm already seeing the perinatologist.  I'm not going to lie .... I'm scared as hell!

  • They schedule them for 39 weeks, so you don't run the risk of going into labor...from what I've heard.

Completely understand that! I had to do the 24 hour urine test too. How often will they be checking your bp? Or do they want you monitoring it at home?

So far just at appts.  But I'm real early still for pre-e.  I didn't start going pre-e until about 24 weeks or so.  I had a really horrible OB that go 'round.  I'm also waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay thinner than I was then and have really super normal blood pressure, eat healthier, drink a lot more water, etc.  So I'm hoping with those improvements, I may not have those complications.  We shall see!

How often do they do the 24 hour urine test?  I work in a nursing home, so I guess if they want me monitoring more often, I've got lots of nurses to take care of me! haha.

  • I agree with the 39 weeks. I am not scheduling a c-section....I will most likely end up with one though, but I would like to go to 40 weeks. It would be great if I went into labor on my own, but it's not likely.

  • Mine was scheduled at 38 weeks with my daughter due to placenta previa. The doctor said that it was 38 weeks because the research showed that for that particular condition it was the safest time frame... so I would assume it will vary doctor to doctor and by medical need. I feel like 38 weeks is about the earliest they schedule though. Good luck!
Tried for 2 years before diagnosed with DOR and low Progesterone. MC at 16 weeks in June 2010 (Told Placenta Previa contributed to the loss)

  • I am a nurse and used to work on mother/baby. It is against the rules for a doctor to induce labor or do a csection before 39 weeks, unless there is medical necessity. Hope that helps!

Not in all hospitals. Also, doctors can say what is medically necessary pretty easily. It's common sense, but not against the law.

  • I did not have a C-section but from people that I know that did they schedule around 39 weeks and are just given a date based on what date the Dr performs surgery's.  I don't think you get to pick but maybe your Dr will let you.

  • They told me 39 weeks. :)

This is correct, according to ACOG. which OB's should follow advice from.

With my first it was scheduled for medical reasons and my Dr said 38 weeks 3 days. This time if all goes well he said I could schedule it at 39 weeks. Or I can get a VBAC. I'm undecided so far. Ask at your next appt and let us know :)

I'm curious. Did the baby do alright after being born at 29 weeks?

She did beautifully. Because she was in so much distress, her vital organs were very developed. She weighed 1lb 13oz and was 13.5". She came out with apgars of 8 and 9. She spent 5 weeks in the NICU and came home at 3lbs 12oz. She's now 9 1/2 years old and the worst thing she has going is she has ADHD. She was really tiny until she was about 3, then started to grow. She's now the tallest girl in her class.

  • I've had two cesareans and will be having a third this year. First of all there is NO standard gestational week that a cesarean is performed. Not 40, not 39, not 38. It fully depends on your past complications, current pregnancy towards the end, the doctor and the baby.
My son was born at 40.4 weeks by emergency cesarean.
My daughter was scheduled at 39 weeks for a cesarean because of the fact that I went full term with my son they wanted to let the baby stay in as long as possible. I went into labour at 37 weeks with my daughter and had a cesarean
This time around my doctor is giving me the choice of having a cesarean at 37 weeks or 38 to avoid early labour. It all depends on several facts and they should all be discussed with yourself, DH and doc to decide on a date
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I believe its as close to 39 weeks as possible.

  • I have never had any conditions during pregnancy that required earlier intervention so cannot speak to that.
Number one went into distress after long labour, and was delivered via c/s. because she was fullterm and small, my Ob felt we should not risk vbac 18 months later. Number 2 scheduled c/s at exactly 39wks. Number 3, 3years later, they were scheduling c/s as close to due date as possible. Due 7/24, delivered 7/21. Never went into labor early, so all according to schedule.
Hopefully all will be well with you and it won't be necessary to go any earlier than is best for you and baby. Good luck!
