Group B Strep Test and Scheduled CS

This may seem silly, but this is my first CS (3rd delivery). My question is this, if you have a scheduled CS, do they still do the swab for GBS around 36 wks or so? It doesn't really matter, I am just curious. I know I can ask the Dr. too, but this is more fun, I can never get to half of my list of questions at my 15 minute appointments, things always come up and they end up being 45 minute ones!

TIA

  • Yes because you can still pass the infection.

  • Yes they still do one.  I asked my doctor the same question as I have my test on Friday.  He told me that pediatricians still like the test to be done.  He says if your water breaks before your scheduled date there is a very small chance it could still pass and pediatricians just like to be prepared.  Since the test is non invasive I thought that was a good enough answer :)

  • They absolutely do.  If you test positive, they will push PCN antibiotics during the procedure to help protect the baby.

Yes, in fact I just had mine today. My CS is scheduled for May 28th due to being breech, she told me this way if she decided to cooperate and flip around we know what I am in case antibiotics are needed..

  • I had a scheduled c-section with my last pregnancy, and my son was born with GBS.  He spent a week in the NICU.  It is important to always be tested, but keep in mine that even if you're negative when you're tested doesn't mean you'll be negative when the baby is born.

Anyways, yes, you should be tested. GBS is seriously dangerous for babies. But easily avoidable with antibiotics prior to the c-section/labor/birth.
