This is sort of a spin off to my question below. Have any of you been able to successfully transition your LO off of specialty formula? Have any of you even tried? Or asked your pedi about this?
I've read where after a certain time period their digestive tracks become less sensitive and they can often times get off of the Alimentum or other specialty formula. For example, LO was on prevacid and we were able to transition him off of it and he is doing fine now. In fact, pedi didn't even give us a new RX at the last appointment. I think a lot of my LO's digestive problems were related to him having IUGR and being slightly early as I have read the problems I have had are common in IUGR babies.
Around the first of the year, we tried re-introducing a tiny bit of my breast milk (frozen) and he got sick. I asked my pedi about transitioning him off of the Alimentum at 6 months and he said he would leave him on it for now. LO is now 8.5 months so I plan to ask again at his 9 month appointment. He is eating all sorts of baby food and even some puff cereals and other foods and it seems to be going fine. His poops are extra stinky and nasty, but he does not seem to be in any discomfort.
Re: Question for those who have a LO with a milk protein intolerance...
DS1 had it bad. I kept him on Alimentum until he was 1. From there I went to Lactaid milk to be careful until he was about 18 months. Then I made the switch to whole milk and he was fine.
In the meantime from about 8 months on I introduced yogurt and cheese. He did great with those. I didn't want to rush into anything bc he was super fussy as an infant from dairy and I was scared shitless to introduce anything to quickly. He is totally fine now and has no food allergies.
We transitioned off of Alimentum and onto Similac Advance when LO was between four and five months. We had great success with it. We were told that at four months a lot of babies digestive systems have matured enough to be put on regular formula.
I'm not sure why your pediatrician won't let you try it, but I'm guessing he has his reasons. Hopefully, he will give you the OK to do it at nine months. Good luck!
He didn't give us an absolute "no" at six months. He just said, "I would leave him on the Alimentum for now if you can afford it." My LO eats a lot. He has gone from being at the 3rd percentile for length to about in the 90th percentile for length. His head is above the 97th percentile. And his weight has gone from the 3rd percentile to about the 50th. So he has been growing like crazy and eating to match it. We go through a $30 can every two days. We spend over $400 a month on formula. Therefore, I would really like to get him on something cheaper. I recently saw a new Similac formula which seems to have the proteins partially broken down so I'm thinking about trying that.

I definitely remember the cost. It's ridiculous what they charge for it. I have seen the new brand in the stores and I'd definitely talk to your pediatrician about trying it instead.
If you have to stay on Alimentum, I'd talk to your insurance company about it. I was told that some will give you money back on it if your doctor says it's necessary. Of course, mine wasn't one of them... but yours may do it.
