Toddler Bed ?s

When did you transition to a toddler bed? What signs made you think your LO was ready? Anybody do it too early and regret it or have a LO refuse to use it?

Re: Toddler Bed ?s

  • We only just moved our 2.5 year old into a toddler bed. He had never tried to climb out and was more than content sleeping in it.

He finally started being able to climb out a few months ago and we were planning on moving him anyway because we have number three on the way and will need his crib (eventually)... so we wanted to move him way ahead of time to get used to it and not have it seem like he was getting 'kicked out' for the baby.

He loves his toddler bed now and, save for a bit of trouble when he isn't very tired and comes out a few times, it is working out well for all of us.

  • We transitioned DD when she was about 18 or 19 months.  I noticed her preferring to sleep in my parent's bed (they watched her) as well as mine's all the time and instinctually it just felt right.  The transition went beautifully.  With DS we plan to keep him in his crib for as looooong as possible.  He is nowhere near as agreeable and chill like DD is!

  • Chloe was about 19/20 months and one night had a fit at bed time.  She screamed in her room for 15 minutes before I went in and calmed her down, when I left the room it was another 10 minutes of crying before it went down to a whimper and she finally fell asleep an hour later.  This was totally unlike her, the next day nap time was really hard as well and I finally laid her in the guest bed for a second so I could go get her some water, when I came back she was fast asleep.  So after nap I converted her crib and that night she went right to sleep.

About 2 weeks after we transitioned she tested her boundaries.  She would get up and lay by the door, we ignored her mostly, only put her back to bed if she was banging on it and/yelling things like momma/dada.  We stuck with it and after a little over a week she is back to sleeping in it no problem.

This happened to us, too.  At 18 months, DD's previously chill, relaxed bedtime routine turned into a 2 hour, screaming until she puked disaster.  We fought it for a week thinking there was no way she was old enough to be out of her crib, but we finally gave up and put her in a bed.  Other than learning to stay in her bed once we said good night which took about 2 weeks, she slept no problem.
