What about a beach umbrella? We are headed to the Caribbean a week from tomorrow with DS who will be 2 months on Tuesday. We plan to keep him under an umbrella in the pack n play. Also have little rash guards and sun hats and will be using neutrogena pure baby sunscreen SPF 60. Antisunscreen folks: save your judgement.
I guess it works for some folks or maybe more importantly, some beaches are better for infants. I have learned twice now that it just plain sucks to have a non-mobile baby at the beach. We're going next weekend for a week at the beach. I'll have just 3 weeks to go when we come home but I am so excited to finally be going WITHOUT a baby-baby! Sucks butt IMO. No sooner than you get sun screen on and get hot and sweaty and the baby needs to nurse, or you get the space for the baby all set up and the wind blows sand in or the baby gets a little sandy during a change or ....
We are taking our LO to the beach in July; he will be about 3 months old. I plan to use one of those UV baby tents that we are borrowing from a friend, and my in-laws (we are going with them) also have a huge beach umbrella. As our doctor said that we shouldn't use sunscreen until LO is 6 months, we probably won't.... I also think I am going to keep him inside at the hottest part/middle of the day. (We can go in for lunch and hang out inside for a couple of hours).

Vindaloo, it's better to use sunblock than nothing at all. The reason they don't want you using sunscreen on babies is because it gets absorbed into their skin, however sunblock does not. So use away!

It was a LITTLE easier when it was just DD.
No sunblock on babies under 6 months, according to my pediatrician. Most baby and kids' sunblock says not for use on babies under 6 months.

No sunscreen on babies under 6 months. My pediatrican said sunblock, however, is fine. We use this: https://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Baby-Lotion-3-Ounce-Tube/dp/B001OMI9T2/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1368918992&sr=1-2&keywords=neutrogena+baby+sunblock
