Natural Birth

Those who have had/plan to have a home birth...

How far are (or were) you from a hospital in case of emergency transfer? How far would you feel would be too far to feel comfortable doing a home birth? I know nobody can make me feel comfy with the idea except myself : ) but I am 45 minutes from a hospital, and that's if there was no traffic or snow (due on Thanksgiving and live up in the mountains). Would that scare you or am I being a worry wart?

Thanks : )

  • To be honest, that would worry me. I lived maybe 10 minutes away in a smaller city with no real traffic concerns to worry about. Snow was a consideration since I was due in February but we didn't think it would add too much time.

  • I am planning a home birth. I am moving next month, but by the time I deliver I will live 7 minutes from a hospital, and 25 minutes from my preferred transfer hospital. I would not do a homebirth if the closest hospital is 45 minutes away, in good weather and traffic. Ultimately, you should talk to your MW and make sure you are comfortable.

  • I am planning a homebirth this time and I am less than 10 mins. from the hospital which is nice. I delivered my son at my MW's birth center and that was actually 15-20 mins from the hospital.

  • As long as I had no major concerns during pregnancy I would totally be okay in your situation. But then home birth is the norm in my family.
