Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many years apart are your kids?

DH and I would like 3 kids. The first 2 are 2 years apart. We are thinking about holding off on #3 for another year due to everything going on in life right now. I am just not sure I like the idea of #3 being 4 and 6 years younger than his/her siblings.

Anyone have a wide gap between in ages for kids? Pros/Cons?

Re: How many years apart are your kids?

  • DD was 2y2m when DS was born and DS will be a day shy of 16m when this DS arrives.  It'll be a tough year at the onset but we're pretty tickled with the ages.  There will be only 3 1/2 years between the oldest and youngest.

  • My 2 will be exactly 2 years apart, June 2011 and June 2013.

Growing up I was the baby and the only girl.  I have 2 older brothers who are 4 and 7 years older than me.  My oldest brother and I were never really close.  I don't think that is always the case though.

  • Our first three are just under three years apart. Kids three and four are two years apart and kids four and five are 19 months apart. We are planning our last baby to be three years younger than Asher. Our oldest children who are 8 and 11 adore the little ones and have a great relationship. My dd is almost ten years older than our youngest and she calls him her baby and he loves her! The closest relationship though is between her and our three year old. I think a wide age spacing can be wonderful since it creates a relationship without competition for attention and fighting over toys ect.

A tiny bit under 17 months apart.

Ideally, we will wait until DS2 is closer to 3 before having another. And most likely we will have numbers 3 and 4 close together [less than 2 years apart].

  • 3 years and 11 months difference and I love the age difference!  It has been so nice...DS1 is such a great helper and is self sufficient when it comes to a lot of things.  Since he is in school every day, I still get the 1-on-1 time with DS2 that I did with DS1 when he was a baby.  I only have 1 in diapers, DS1 can communicate fully and clearly and he LOVES his baby brother.
  • I was wondering the same thing. I heard 3 years is great! I read on mommypolls.com that 2 years is just busy and close together
  • Mine are 2y4m apart and I'm feeling the same way as you--I don't want my next two that close. I'm thinking more like 3.5 years apart between DS and the next. Like on PP said, the older sibling is more self sufficient and going to preschool and I think (hope!) I'll feel like I can keep my head on straight a little better than I did when I had DS.

My aunt has three--the first two are 20 months apart, then the third was 4 years later. There aren't any weird dynamics with the kids and they all get along great, so that's what's encouraging me to be okay with waiting.

  • My oldest was born June 2009, My second was born 2 years and 1 week later in June 2011, and the third is due 2 years and 1 month after #2 in July 2013.  So 2 years between 1st & 2nd and 2 years b/w 2nd & 3rd.

  • My kids are just over 2 years apart, but my siblings and I have 5-6 year age gaps.  There are 5 of us and all except for the 1st 2 (only 1 year apart) mom had a new baby every 5-6 years.  I really like this age gap.  I am too old to even think of waiting that long for another though (already 35 years old).  The next oldest sibling was in Kindergarden and really exceited for a baby sister/brother.  I love all my siblings and we all get along.

  • Mine are almost 21 months apart.  I love their age gap.  I'm really torn on having a 3rd.  I'm pretty sure we won't, but if we decide to, I want to get pregnant next year so there is less than 5 years between DD1 and the 3rd.  I'm the oldest of 3 girls and we have issues with my youngest sister (6 years my junior) always feeling left out.

  • Our daughter turns 2 on August 11th. I'm due with our second around August 28th. So 2ish years apart. We wanted all of our kids to be pretty close in age with no big gaps and we want a large family but we're thinking that when we try for our third we'll leave an extra year between (if we get our way. lol). We want to be out of this house and husband to at least be almost done with school.

  • I'm 6.5 years older than my half brother (we weren't raised together until I was 12, and we are not close at all.

I have been thinking about when we will start trying again, and I want DS to be out of diapers, so probably when he is 2.5 to 3, we will look at trying again.

I can't even imagine a second kiddo right now and I hate being pregnant, so I need mommynesia, before that happens again!

  • we are trying to put in a few years between the first two, and we will most likely be adopting a third, that is a bit older. we do want like 2-3 years between them, and we don't mind them being having a bit of age between them. although i can see the appeal of having them closer.

  • What you describe is almost the exact gap between me and my siblings.  Younger bro #1 is 18 months younger than me.  #2 is 6 years younger.

Pluses to the closer in age brother is we were pretty much into the same stuff at the same time.  Minuses was that we were into the same stuff at the same time...and that our personalities are so different we never really got along.  The younger brother drove me nuts growing up (copying me), but now we're pretty close.

  • DD was a month shy of 3 when DS was born. I really like the age gap. She's independent enough to do a lot of things on her own, was potty trained before he came (so only ever had 1 in diapers at a time!) and she's been a great helper with her brother. If we have another, we'll probably shoot for that same age gap or even a bit further apart.
