Waving the White Flag When It Comes To Naps

My LO is just a terrible napper. She has only napped for over an hour in her crib maybe 10 times (and she is almost 9 months old). She used to nap in her swing and lately she is back to being held by me for her naps because she started taking 15 min naps and that was making momma crazy. We hired a sleep consultant and so far no change. I think at this point all I can do is just give up and accept that this is just our situation.

Anyone else decide to say "I give up!" to better naps in an attempt to regain back some sanity?

  • It seems to me that most LOs go through a phase where they fight naps, hard, and only cat nap a couple times a day. They do outgrow it.

  • Is your LO crabby when she's up,,, or is she just fine and seemingly not tired?
My daughter does nap well after around 4to 5 months of me holding her for naps but I was losing my mind when I tried to base our day on her napping. It was terrible.
Good for you! If you can try to move on and just do as you wish, she could cat nap in the car. My friend did this until her daughter finally quit fighting naps around 1 year, and then she took like a three hour nap everyday! I hope this is the case for you eventually. There's nothing worse than waiting for a baby to nap, and then they don't! And then you keep thinking they're tired, then hungry, then exhausted, then you have no idea what even happened at all all day!!!!

  • It is very rare that DD naps longer than an hour unless she is held. I count my lucky stars that she sleeps 11 hours solid at night so I take the good with the bad. I figure in 5 years she won't need naps any more, but she will always need a good night's sleep.

  • here with you. My lil man will only nap longer then a half hour if he's held. I always give in just so he gets some sleep. but at mil's house (one of our sitters for work) she cant just sit and hold him cause she also has her other grandson who is 3. he's just started maybe giving her 45 min naps. I always know he's going to cry himself into a nap as soon as we leave there cause he's just tired. and he's not a good night time sleeper either. So you're not alone!

  • I was in this boat for a long time. My LO would catnap all day. Usually three or four 40 minute naps. We had a hard time because he really needed more awake time to be able to sleep longer but he wasn't really capable of staying up that long and if he did he would get overtired and things would get worse. For us it just was timing. I think he just got bigger, older, etc. and was able to stay up 3-4 hours between naps. He now takes two 1.5 hour naps, sometimes he will even take a 2 hour nap--or longer, which I don't typically let him do b/c he will stay up way too late. If she isn't getting that much nap time I would guess she is overtired. I'm assuming she has no trouble in the crib at night? If she is able to self-soothe it may just be a timing issue.
