Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Awake times

Could you guys tell me the age of your LO and there average length of awake time during the day. I'm just trying to gauge where my DD is that and when I can start extending her awake time. She's 3 and a half months

Re: Awake times

  • There's a growth spurt around 3mo.  After they get through that they should be able to stay awake 2-3 hours between naps.  Watch for sleepy cues.

  • My little boy will be 15 weeks on Monday and he can go up to about 2 hrs being awake but usually starts to get cranky if he's awake too much longer after that. HTH

DS will be 5 months tomorrow. He is usually up about 2 hours between naps. He can go over that, but he'll get cranky real fast.

  • It also depends on naps.  My DD is a crappy napper so she can sometimes only go 1 1/2 between naps before starting to melt down.
  • DS is almost 15 weeks, and stays awake about 2 hours between naps during the day. If he goes closer to 3, he gets overtired and super fussy.

  • DS is 15 weeks and his best is 90 minutes. Anymore than that and he fights his naps and gets worked up quickly. But he only naps for 30 minutes at a time, so I figure that's why his awake times are are the lower end of average.

  • At 3 months he was up for 2 hours asleep for 2 hours. So, up at 6 am and asleep from 8 to 10 am. Up for 2 more hours and asleep for 2 more hours. Then we started bedtime at 6 pm, and he'd be asleep by 7 pm. I would just watch the clock and start rocking him for his nap about 20 min before the 2 hour mark, and it worked like a charm.

Now his sleep cues don't coincide with that schedule, so at 5 months he's up for 2 hours in the morning, usually 5 to 7 am. Then sleeps for 2 hours fro 7 to 9 am. Then he's up for 3 hours and will take another 2 hour nap from 12 to 2 pm. Then, he's up until 7 pm, but we start bedtime at 6 pm. Sometimes he's asleep by 6:30. It just depends.

My suggestion is observe when his sleep cues start in relation to when he awoke. Then, start getting him ready for a nap 20 min before he usually shows signs. So if he looks sleepy after 2 hours awake, then the next day try to get him to sleep after he's been up for 1 hour and 40 minutes. This way you avoid overtired, cranky baby.

  • My LO just turned 4 months and she starts to get cranky after being awake for an hour. She only take 45 min naps, but I thought by now she would be able to last 2 hours. Oh well
  • DD is 19 weeks, and she is up for about 3 to 4 hours at a time. She now only takes three naps a day, and has been since 3 months.

N is 5 1/2 months and he has just now moved up to 2 hours awake time between naps and about 3 hours before bedtime. For the longest time, he could only be up for about an hour in the morning and 1 1/2 hours for the other times.
