Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

I had another appointment today with my MW who I expressed my concerns with about my pelvic pain. She confirmed I in fact probably do have SPD. My body is producing relaxin too early therefore causing my pelvis to shift like it shouldn't. It is quite uncomfortable but the fitted me with a bigger pelvis support band and recommended that I go to physical therapy. I remember feeling like this with my 2nd but not until 3rd tri. Just is a little setback this time because it literally hurts to walk, to get in/out of the car, to put my pants on and pretty much anything that has to do with my lower pelvic region. I waddle which I feel ridiculous sometimes because I am not heavy with child but I can't help it because it really does hurt to walk. Anyone else with this problem please feel free to share stories/relief or anything.

  • Ugh that sounds miserable! If it makes you feel any better, I'm doing the pregnant waddle too, but it's because of my lower back. Ice seems to help, maybe it'll help you too?

Wish that was an option but it is low in my pelvis through my groin area. To be honest I don't want to stick ice anywhere near my vag. LOL!

Hmm I never considered this. I am for sure having issues I didn't have until 3rd tri with my last pregnancy already with this one. I just thought the relaxin would come earlier this time than last. But my hips pop every time I walk. My lower back hurts ALL the time. And I have to waddle because of the pain too. Huh worth mentioning to my MW when I go.

Yea for sure, hip popping is also a symptom.

  • I have the same thing going on and I had it my last pregnancy : Just a warning, physical therapy may not work. It made it hurt worse for me : I'm so sorry you're going through this pain too

  • I'm so sorry. That sounds awful. I'm not familiar with the problem, but maybe yoga could help? It really helped me with pain when I was pregnant with DS.
  • I have had low back problems for years, and it sometimes causes various pains all throughout the pelvis area. What has helped me the most is seeing a physical therapist who does manipulation, sort of like a chiropractor does. For example, one thing she does is literally pull my leg -- the femur seems to lodge into the joint and needs to be popped out.  I also do some exercises to help keep the muscles in the area strong.

    Thank you for the warning!

  • No problem! I mean it may work for you but really with that joint being so loose it's hard to find anything that can help other than birthing a baby lol

  • I suffered with this in my first pregnancy and apparently it gets worse with each pregnancy so I really am dreading if this is true. I understand what you mean about waddling and it truly is painful. I don't think anyone realises the pain until they experience it. It used to keep me up at night and I'd end up in tears somedays because the pain and uncomfortableness was simply unbearable any longer.
I had physiotherapy for a short while during pregnancy as there are limits on what stretches you can do with a huge bump in front of you. I also had the pelvic support band which seemed to help sometimes.
I found that swimming helped only for short periods like 10 to 15 minute sessions. And also the wii fit doing the hula. This one was proved difficult whilst I was pregnant but it was a godsend afterwards an helpede tremendously as it is good for pelvic alignment.
I also had to have physiotherapy for 6 months after I have birth because my pelvic didnt align properly after birth and my one leg was shorter than the other. I hope you find some ease with is as it really is a horrible thing to experience. Best of luck!
  • I was just talking to my sister about this! She had her DD in oct 12, it was her 2nd and she was waddling waaaay early on! I made fun of her at the time and then we got to talking about it. She said it felt like her "vagina was cracking in half" Well, here I am and I'm having it too! It's the worst when I roll over in bed, stand on one leg to put pants on or anything of that sort! I never had anything like this with my DS. I can only imagine it getting worse as I actually am carrying around the weight of a baby! ugh

  • Oh interesting! I'm pretty much already waddling, my hips are spreading already and ache, my lower back and hips pop. I'm not in an unbearable amount of pain though, I use those thermal heat pads and I think my ai chi pool classes really help to stretch everything out and relax.

I find it works if you sit down to put pants or shoes on because I noticed that as well. I forgot about it one evening and rushed out of bed to get the door and felt like i separated my leg from my pelvis, I was in tears. Everything has to be slow and methodical.

See I also had it with my second in third tri but I didn't know that is what it was and you are right, it is worse this time around!!!

  • Aww! You wouldn't know what it was unless you are aware of SPD or questioned your pains to a professional. I hope you find something that helps ease it, I wouldn't wish it in anyone it's just pure agony somedays. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I won't get it too bad this time but if I'm honest I'm not too hopeful about that by what I've read on it. I'm only 10w 3d at the moment and think it started at about 18w last time.
  • I'm a runner and was running 5K's and winning my age groups. Then about 4 weeks ago, I ran one of my best times ever, and by the end of the day I could barely walk. I let it go for about 2 weeks before I finally waddled my way into my Dr's office where I was handed the same diagnosis. My running days are done until baby gets her Aug 3rd, which has been VERY hard for me! But I have found that the elliptical trainer and weight-training coupled with a Gabrialla Maternity Support belt has helped make it more manageable. I feel your pain (literally!!)

I wrote about having these symptoms a couple weeks ago too. I went to my doctor with the concerns and he told me it was just round ligament pain and it would come and go: I read that some doctors don't really recognize it and my doctor is pretty old school. The pressure I have been feeling is really painful too. I was at my MFM the other day and we talked about the pressure, which he was really concerned about, and I forgot to bring up SPD. I have just been trying to sit or lay as much as I can.

  • i had been having this been since about my 4th month gradually getting worse and just now (35 wks) realized this is what it was. this is my first pregnancy and i just assumed it was part of normal pregnancy due to hips spreading, etc. it isnt excruciating, but it feels like im pulling a muscle every time i try to get up, lift my legs, roll over or exert any effort with my legs. but my muscles are fine its my actual bone in the middle (my pubic bone?) that hurts. i notice it specifically after ive been walking for even just a short time. i hate to self-diagnose but i haven't talked to my ob about it yet, but im pretty sure its a mild form of this. hopefully it doesnt effect delivery :/
