Natural Birth

GBS +

It turns out that my results came back positive for GBS. I had most of my questions answered by my doc, but any info from you guys would be helpful.  Any BTDT moms had any problems with it?  Does anyone know how soon you need to go to the hospital? I know to go straight in if my water breaks, and I know they want to do four hours of the I.V. so I would guess you should go as soon as possible.  Also, how do you know if you're allergic to penicillin? I think that's something that I would've known before now, but I don't know if I've ever had it before.

Re: GBS +

  • The only time it would be a problem (or a potential one) is when you give birth.

I was GBS+, and they had to break my water, so I was not ever in any danger from the GBS when I wasn't at the hospital. They gave me the IV and I was able to do anything, as long as I had the stint in (which was fine for me, I wasn't hindered or bothered by it at all).

  • I was positive too and my 1st small bag of water broke at home. They put me on ABT and then my labor was 25 hrs. So i had several doses, then at about 2wks old my son got a rash above his crotch, diaper cream didnt work... Finally i put it together and realized it was probably yeast from ABT and vagasil cleared it in a day. None if this interfered with my natural birth so no worries.
  • Thank you!

Did anyone try taking probiotics to prevent yeast infections/thrush in baby? I would like to keep that good bacteria in tact.

To be quite honest, and people might curse me for saying this, I wish that I didn't have to take the antibiotics or that I didn't even know about being positive.  I of course would never opt out of something that can decrease risk to my DD, but the risks are already so small that she would contract GBS anyway that it kind of scares me that the antibiotics could cause even worse bacteria to thrive that would be more resistant to antibiotics (such as e. coli or "superbugs").

I'm going to take the penicillin like a good little patient, but I wish there was a better way to deal with this.  Harmful bacteria is becoming more and more resistant to these antibiotics due to overusing them in situations like this.  Just kind of freaks me out.

I tested positive before birth as well. Within a few weeks I got a case of thrush that I just couldn't shake no matter what I did. I started taking probiotics and haven't had it back since. I would recommend taking them after!!

If you have time to be retested, you can use a crushed garlic clove or odorless garlic capsules vaginally at night and it will kill the GBS withon a week. This has been reported in medical journals and is practiced by MW's practice with consistent results. You can also take the garlic capsules orally for extra effect.

If you don't have time for a retest I would take the antibiotic but definitely take probiotics and some garlic caps and/or grapefruit seed extract to prevent a yeast flare up.
  • I was too late to the hospital for antibiotics with my first.  In retrospect, I'm so thankful I was.  They just kept us for 48 hours to observe the baby.  With my second, I had a home birth and didn't test for GBS at all.  I figured since I had it before, it didn't matter what I tested at 36 weeks, I should be "treated" as if I was positive (b/c you can be positive at 36 weeks and negative at birth, or negative at 36 weeks and positive at birth).  But, for my MW, treating as positive just meant observing the baby carefully for the first 48 hours.  No antibiotics.  There are plenty of studies that show antibiotics for all women who test positive for GBS at 36 weeks pregnant is just plain not necessary.
