Pregnant after a Loss

Any success stories with balanced translocation?

Well my husband and I decided to go to a specialist after our 3rd loss in March. They did all sorts of tests on me that all came back normal, which is good. But hubby came back with balanced translocation. It's really discouraging. We didn't get the full scoop from the doctor yet but this is not really the diagnosis I wanted to hear. It's all up to chance. Not sure how many miscarriages I can handle. Would appreciate any encouraging stories or words of advice. Thank you.

I highly recommend joining either the yahoo group (although I found it confusing with layout/posting) or the facebook groups- I think there are a few. I got dx after my 3rd loss as well. I had one loss, then my DS, then four more losses. I am due with a healthy baby girl in about 3 weeks. (we do know that 1 of my losses was not due to BT, though)

It's confusing, and you will need to be your own advocate. A lot of doctors, even REs don't know that much about it. I suggest contacting or having your dr contact Dr. Trunka in NY (I think) she keeps a database and can give you your specific odds of conceiving a normal baby, a balanced baby, an unbalanced baby, or miscarrying.

It's a lot to take in. The time between my dx and deciding to ttc again was the worst 6 months of my life. ((hugs))

I have an inversion of the 5th chromosome, so not quite the same as a balanced translocation but similar.  I joined the yahoo group at one point and did find one other person whose DH had the same thing.  I agree with PP that the format is a little confusing.

I basically got the same info from my RE - that we can keep trying and it's kind of up to chance whether everything matches up correctly.  I have a DS that is almost 2 and I am currently 21 weeks pregnant, I had 3 losses total before I had testing done. The other option my RE suggested was IVF where they look at the embryos (gosh I apologize if that is not the right term I can't remember now) chromosomes to determine which is balanced or "normal".  I apologize if I didn't explain that well, we actually were newly pregnant when we received our diagnosis so we ended up not doing this.

(( Hugs )) I'm sorry for your diagnosis, it really does suck.  I hope your doctor can give you lots of good information and options for you.

  • I am sorry to hear of your losses and balanced translocation dx. After two losses DH and I were also tested and he has a balanced translocation. I would suggest taking some time to try and learn as much as you can about BTs, ask to be referred to a genetic counselor who can answer all of your questions.

We decided to move forward with IVF with PGD. We just completed our third cycle and I will be 5 weeks pregnant tomorrow. We have a long way to go and it took us a while to get here. It was not an easy road, but I think the best thing you can do is educate yourself as much as you can and be your own advocate.

I'd also suggest joining the Yahoo group for more info.

  • I do not have a balanced translocation but my mother does. She had many miscarriages but also had five healthy children. I do not know a ton about it and I don't know if it is different depending on whether the male or female has it. She was basically told that there is a 50/50 chance with each pregnancy that the fetus would be affected by the balanced translocation. I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way.

  • I'm sorry for your losses.

I have a BT (3 and 4) and I am currently 27w,5d pregnant with spontaneous twins after transferring 1 embryo (IVF).

BTs tend to have less of an impact if its the male partner, so I'd be curious what the doc has to say.  Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses. After two losses and a karyotype we learned I have a Robertsonian translocation 13 and 14. It was a shock to learn, but given our age, 37, we decided two losses and a year and a half of trying we went straight to ivf with PGD. It was stressful, but after a c/p our second transfer worked and I'm over 32w pg with a baby. There is hope after a BT diagnosis. There are a few others that responded to you that I email with, cupcake and CNYbride. They are both pg now!! It's nice to have others who have been through similar situations to talk to. If you need more info or want to talk, PM me. Good luck, I hope all our success stories give you hope!
