Twins..... but no heartbeat

Hi Ladies,

I got the most interesting news today...I am pregnant with twins and this is my first pregnancy.  However, they could not find a heartbeat for either baby.  Talk about emotional!

I am going to go back on Wednesday, and hopefully we will see heartbeats then.  They say I should have heartbeats by now because I am estimated to be 8 weeks, but I am going to wait to next week for a final decision. Maybe I am just not as far a long as I thought.

 Fingers Crossed!

  • Did he say that the babies are measuring 8 weeks? Or are you 8 weeks according to your LMP. If it's your LMP, then I'd say you may be fine as you could have ovulated or implanted late. If each fetal pole is measuring 8 weeks, then I'd say you should be seeing heartbeats by now. Either way, good luck! I hope you get great news next week!

Um...okay. I'll bite. There are two types of twins (okay there are more, but there are two main types) identical twins will be one gestational sac, and your first clue will usually be two yolk sacs (one big black blob with two little white dots in it) then later on you should start to see two fetal poles and two heartbeats.

Fraternal twins will be in two different gestational sacs (two black blobs) and then obviously yolk sacs in each, then fetal poles, then heartbeats.

While commenting in a post where someone is concerned for the viability of her babies, I really don't think it's appropriate to say it's exciting and then ask a bunch of questions and talk about your own pregnancy. Especially without offering T&Ps, advice, or support for the fear concern she is feeling. I guess that's just me though. Everyone can flame me if they want, but hey. I answered her question, I just couldn't help but give my opinion.

Glad you said this. Couldn't agree more.

OP Thoughts and prayers over the next few days as you wait, that is really tough and stressful! Hope they find two healthy heartbeats next time!

I really do not know much about the size of the babies. I will ask at my next appointment.

  • I'm in the same boat!! Last week I had my first ultrasound and they found TRIPLETS!!! But no heartbeats. We go back on Monday for another ultrasound. Fingers crossed for both of us!
  • Last time I went into the doctor they thought I may be having twins but they weren't sure even thought there was two heartbeats. Then I went in the next week guess what...not twins. You don't worry my dear. I heard a story of a women who went through her whole pregnancy thinking she was only having one baby and ended up with two! Turns out the second baby's heartbeat was in sync with her own! Sometimes it's just too early to tell. I'll be praying for you and your sweet baby or babies!
  • Good luck to all the Mammys in limbo. It's awful, but hopefully you will all get good news x

  • Thoughts and prayers for a heartbeat next week.  Hopefully you just ovulated late.
