Convertible car seats........

Hi Ladies,

I'm looking into getting our daughter a convertible car seat.  After yesterdays board, it looks like there are plenty of you using them so I am hoping you wouldn't mind telling me what kind you have and the pros and cons of it :) TIA!

Re: Convertible car seats........

  • I have the Graco My Ride 65. I don't really have anything bad to say about it. It received good safety ratings, it looks rather plush/comfy, there's cup holders, cute design, and reasonably priced. Some may say it's kind of bulky, but I have a midsize SUV, and she's my only child. Size isn't really a problem for me.

I have another one, I don't remember the model, but it's an Evenflo. I don't really have anything bad to say about this one either, other than it doesn't look very plush in comparrison. This one rarely gets used.

we have Recaro ProRide's in both cars. Love love love them! :)

Pro: Race car drivers use Recaro, so it's gotta be safe?

Pro: super easy to install with latch or tether. No rethreading needed to raise the shoulder strap positioning. Baby is very comfy. Can RF to 40lbs or like 52" tall, which we will be doing. Very light weight and the base is only 12" wide, so it fits perfect in the center seat of my Odyssey while my 3 year old's car seat is on the drivers side and now an adult can sit behind the passenger.

Con: Due to the slope of the back seat of my previous car, and the slope of the back seat of DH's car, we have to do the pool noodle trick under the seat to get it recline all the way.

  • Safety first Alpha and Omega- He is still really small in it so he has lots of room grow. It's really cozy. My baby thinks it's his throne. He digs it alot.

Something I hate- When he falls asleep I have to pull over and prob his head up with his doggy since he about strangles himself his head hangs so low.

  • We also have the Recaro ProRide. I like it a lot, but I will say that it takes some maneuvering to get DS into it in the back of my Accord. We have also done the pool noodle trick b/c my backseat slants a lot like PP said. The only thing that bothers me is that it seems to shift easily from side to side. It's tethered as tightly as we can get it, and the tethered side doesn't shift. I keep thinking I need to run it through a carseat inspection just to be sure it's installed right.

We also have it and like it. It is kind of big, I have a mid-size sedan, but I like that it is side-impact tested.

the my ride goes up to 65lbs, so it will be a while. It stays rear facing until 40lbs.

  • We have the Maxi Cosi Pria 70 and it is worth every penny we spent on it....we bought 2, 1 for each car. DS is so comfy and doesn't over heat in his seat, we live in FL so it gets HOT!
  • We have a Britax Marathon in my car.

Pros: High weight limits (RF to 40lbs and FF to 70lbs), no rethread harness, very comfortable, push button LATCH connectors, can be tethered rear facing, steel frame (although this makes the seat super heavy), easy to install.

Cons: Short shell, so not a good choice for tall kids as most kids will outgrow a seat by height before weight (my son is short, so it worked out okay for us), expensive.

If I were in the market for a convertible seat now, the Chicco Nextfit would be high on my list.

We have an Evenflo Tribute in DH's truck.

Pros: Lightweight, affordable. Came with a cupholder.

Cons: straps twist easily, pain in the a** to install (but we had to use the seatbelt in DH's truck since it doesn't have LATCH).

  • My have a MyRide65 for each DD. No complaints here. They are bulky, but fit fine in our Accord.

Had this w/DS and the straps were always getting twisted.  We also had difficulty getting it to tighten all the way without extra effort.  We "splurged" for DD and bought a Foonf for my car.  (We bought a Peg Perrego originally, but it didn't fit well in my car.  I also didn't like how difficult it was to loosen and tighten the straps on such an expensive seat).  In DH's car we have a Britax Roundabout.  I bought that one from a car seat lady.  It was cheap and is our backup seat.  I normally wouldn't purchase a used seat, but I trusted the woman that was selling it as she is very into car seat safety (does installations, etc.).

DS is in a combination seat.  We kept him RFing until he was a little over 3.  He still could comfortably fit RFing, but it was hard for me w/dd to help him get in his seat as he would get stuck on his feet climbing up.  He is really tall 90% to over 100% but he was still able to comfortably RF in the My Ride.  He is now in a Britax Frontier 85 SICT in my car and in a Graco Nautilus in my dh's car.  (We primarily always drive in mine).

I literally have to climb into the seat, pull the cover off of the side, pull the latch "tail" up at an angle towards me and pull really hard.  If you can do that, it'll get really freaking tight!
