3 year old hides to poop :/

My son turned 3 last week.  We have been potty training for a year, and he has going pee on his own down pat.  However, when it comes to pooping, he always hides.  And it seems like he would rather hold it and constipate himself than to have someone realize he is going.  I feel so bad that he makes himself so uncomfortable, but don't know how to encourage him to go on the potty.  We have tried rewards but they don't have any influence.  He screams if we try to sit him on the potty to poop, so I usually don't force it.

 Help?

Tell him he can sit on the potty by himself & yell for you when he is done. This is what got my daughter finally pooping in the potty. She still won't poop if anyone is in the bathroom with her at 4.

No advice, but comiseration. DS did that for the longest time.
  • My son does the same thing,  He isn't yet 3 so I haven't worried too much, but he always runs and hides and gets quiet to poop.  Then I ask if he is pooping and he will say NO, but he has, then he comes over and says "I stinky".  Then we walk into the bathroom and dump poop, if possible into the toilet and say bye bye to poop.  He gets it but still won't poop on potty, so I am curious to see how people respond.  If I have any success I will let you know.
