My babysitter asked us to watch her kids for an hour or two tomorrow morning while she and her husband go to a wake. They are 3 and 5. At the same time tomorrow morning, my parents are coming over so we can use my dad's truck to go and pick up a yard of loam and then use it in the yard. My mom was planning to come to help with DD while DH, dad and I play with dirt, and now I'm going to have two more kids. I also have a psycho dog, so I was planning on everyone being outside, with the dog inside (we'll be in and out of the gate moving dirt, so the opposite won't work.).
There's nothing fun about my yard - we don't even have a single swing anymore. But it is fenced, so there's that. When DD goes out to play, she's totally content to climb around on her wagon, pick dandelions (because I have TONS of them!), or kick a ball. What are a 3 and 5 year old going to do in our yard for two hours?
We've been wanting to get DD a water table, and thought maybe we'd go and buy one tonight. Would it be wrong to let our friends' kids get soaking wet playing in a water table?
ETA: I saw the "outdoor activities" thread below, but those seem to be mostly projects and I just need ideas for stuff they can play with, not so much a project, kwim?
Re: I have two kids coming to my house tomorrow . . .
Sidewalk chalk in driveway?
Paint your windows with shaving cream.
Mega blocks outside or big trucks to push around.
Sprinkler or water table would be fine. I would call and tell them your plans so they could send swim suits or extra clothes and sunscreen.
I'd give your friends a heads up about the water table. Not so much for permission, but if it were me I'd appreciate knowing so I could send a set of dry clothes.
We have a play structure in our yard but it is mostly ignored by my 3yo in favor of the little stuff - taking turns riding in/pulling her sister in the wagon, kicking around a soccer ball, drawing with sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles. She'll pick dandelions all day long, especially the ones that have gone white because she loves to blow the seeds. If you have some extra dirt/sand, buckets and shovels or even bowls and spoons to dig are fun.

DD2 Sept 2011
Oooooh, we do have horseshoe pits, and DD has a whole big set of beach toys. I generally try to keep DD away from the pits because I don't want to encourage the sand all over the yard, but that could be fun! I hadn't even though of that.
If we end up buying the water table tonight, I will definitely text our friends and let them know.
I guess I just needed reassurance that our friend's kids weren't going to just be sitting around bored at our house, since they have SO MANY outside toys at their house, including a giant new play structure thing.
