Has anyone's LO exhibited odd movements or symptoms following a long infection, likely due to strep? Ds had a terrible infection a month ago (we all got it--worst I've had in years) and it never fully cleared, so 2 weeks ago we started him on antibiotics. Anyhow, I've noticed that since on the meds, his appetite is decreased even for him (he doesn't eat well) and the last few days he's been extra clumsy and falling a lot more. He has mild hyptonia and used to have ataxia as an infant, especially following vaccines, but he has been fairly solid for a while now. Anyhow, today I also could swear I saw him doing odd little jerky movements with his arms, neck and head. I can't tell if it was just him being uncomfortable in his booster and fidgeting a lot, or something more pathological. It struck me as unusual though. I know there are some syndromes like chorea and PANDAS post-strep infections. But again, this was so subtle that I'm not sure what to think. My son has a history of transient movement disorders too, but it's beena long time now since we've dealt with anything.
Re: Odd movements after strep infection?
Yes, everything I read seems to focus on older kids. I myself developed tics as a kid. It's so hard to describe what I think I'm seeing. He's at daycare today and I called his provider to ask if she can see if she notices anything odd. I'm trying to not read into something that isn't there, but after all the movement related issues we've had, it's hard not to. I will watch him very closely tonight and get a call in to the ped if anything stands out again.
Thanks, no, never dealt witha DAN. He's on antibiotics, but cefprozil rather than penicillin since he had a reaction to amoxicillin last time. Not sure if this med is as effective, but I believe it's supposed to be.
