Toddlers: 24 Months+

When did/will you switch to FF in the car?

LO is not quite 2 but will be in July, so this is a little premature but I was thinking about it this week as I squeeze him into the RFing seat lol.

LO is still RFing, but it's getting increasingly difficult to get him into his car seat as he gets bigger. FWIW he is 35in last time I measured him (~1m ago). In our extra seat he is actually too tall to RF, because it's a shorter shell but that's at my sister's house since she babysits occasionally. He still has a little space to grow in the seat in our car. I have tried letting him climb in on his own and he seems to think it's more fun to climb OVER the seat and around the car. But if I put him in he sits there fine.

Anyhow, I know the recommendation is 2yrs so I just wondered when people switched.

  • I switched DD when she reached the height limit on her seat. She was 32 months.

  • We didn't switch DS until he was about 30 months (pretty much exactly 2 1/2).  I wanted to wait until 3, but he out grew the height limit.  He still hasn't outgrown the weight, but the height hit us first. :(
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • We flipped DD1 at 2y9m when she outgrew the seat by height - she was 39in. I would have liked to have kept her RFing to 3yo, and that is still my goal for DD2.

  • We'll switch when he reaches the heigh/weight limit.  It's harder and harder to get him in (i think my prego belly doesn't help).  But I feel it's worth the inconvenience.

  • We won't until he outgrows the RF limits of his seat. He's 36" and 30 lbs and still RFing comfortably. I think he'll be at least 3 before he grows out of his seat.

At that point, we may reevaluate and decide to purchase a seat with higher weight and height limits. It's very important to me and I want to keep doing it as long as possible.

  • I switched her right around a year.  14 months maybe?  She'd figured out how to unbuckle her harness so I figured being able to see that to stop her outweighed RF.

  • DS is 3 and still RFing. We will switch him either when he gets too tall/his head is less than 1" from the shell, or when DS2 needs the convertible.
  • My son is 2 years 7 months and is still RF.  For the past two months he is all about doing stuff himself so he climbs in and out of his seat himself and I buckle him in once he's sitting down.  My short term goal is 4 or when he outgrows the shell on his car seat.

  • DD is almost 3.  We switched her about 2 months ago so at around 2.5 yrs.
  • We're doing it next month. He's actually already outgrown the height of the shell but they only do the professional installations here once a month and we were out of town for the May one. He's perfectly happy with his legs folded, so I'd have preferred to go longer.

  • When she hits the weight or height limit. She's 38.5in and 34.5lbs, so it won't be too long, but I put her in sideways, she straightens herself out, and then I buckle her in. It's a tight fit, but we make it work.

Callum rear faced to the limit on the Marathon we had at the time - he was a few months past 3.  Eleanor is still rear facing and will be until she hits the limit which will likely be well past 3 if not 4 as she's on the smaller side.
  • DD is still RFing at 2yr8mon and is in the 75% for height.  Her legs are scrunched, but she doesn't know any different :)
  • All the scrunch leg talk reminded me - DD seems to prefer something to help hold up her feet/rest them on.  I think she will dislike being turned around a bit because she'll lose that.

  • I am hoping to get DD2 as close to 4 years as possible.

She's 2y10m, 34 lbs, and 39". She rides rear facing in a Graco MySize70 or a Diono Radian. The MySize has a 40 lb rear facing weight limit and adjustable head rest. She should be able to rear face up to 40 lbs. The Radian has a 45 lb weight limit but a shorter shell, so I think she'll actually outgrow that one first.

I lifted her in and out through my whole pregnancy and have to lift her in and out still. She can climb in if she wants to... I kind of fold her like a pretzel to set her in.

  • We had to switch DD when DS was born (2 1/2) because there isn't room for her to RF in our truck. We are hoping to get a new car by winter, and I might RF DD again.

It's actually important that you know how to install your own carseat. I'd make sure that they show you how when you have it done.

  • DS1 is almost 2.5 and is still rear-facing.  I'll probably leave him that way awhile longer, but he's a peanut and nowhere near an inch from the shell and only 28lbs.

  • My sons won't reach the rear facing height limit for years, so we'll discuss when they are 4 or 5. Hopefully they don't complain too much. [its my in laws who complain.]

I think DS was 26 months or so. Afew months after he turned 2.
  • 28 months. We switched her right before DD2 was born. Since we were adding another car seat, we were moving her seat to behind the driver. Her seat would not work well RF behind me, unless I was really really short! If DD2 wasn't on her way, I probably would have kept her rear facing a bit longer.

I had planned on waiting as long as possible but my exhusband switched him FF at 2 and it became a battle to keep him RF in my car. So at 2.

dd4 will too. She's had the opportunity to ff and not happy about it, there's nowhere for her legs to go. She ends up crossing her legs.

Dd is 95%, she only has a few months left rf if we're lucky. About age three at max?

  • Right around 2.  DD is super tall.

  • We switched at 14 months

  • We will likely switch around 2.  The rear-facing weight limit on his seat is 40 lbs, and he was 35 lbs. a month ago.  So, I think our rear-facing days are numbered.  We're going on vacation in October when he'll be 27 months, and we'll almost certainly turn him around for the vacation.  He gets sick on long drives and I'm hoping FF will help.

  • H switched the seat in his SUV around 27-28 mo.  The seat in my SUV is still rear facing.

I will keep mine RF until E hits the height limit.

  • We're still RF. We're talking about turning her around at 2.5, though as long as she's happy and within the limits, I'm happy to keep her RF. She's 95% for height, so we're watching the height limits of her seats to see how it plays out. No rush.

  • DD was almost 2.5 when we switched.  She was at the height limit, otherwise she would have stayed RFing longer.

  • DS was 18 months.  We switched him right before the 12 hour drive to visit family for Christmas.  DD will probably be similar.
