Potty chair or Toilet?

Since we are on the subject of potty training...who is going to use a potty chair and who is going to use the toilet/toddler seat attachment? Sorry I can't make it a poll! I'm asking because of all my family and friends, they've always had their LO's use the regular toilet and put the toddler seat on it. Now that I'm on TB, I see a lot of people using the potty chair. I personally will use the toilet/toddler seat attachment. I don't feel like cleaning poop out of a bucket or having a potty chair in my living room.

Re: Potty chair or Toilet?

  • I have the potty chair that also has an attachment that goes on the regular toilet.  I plan on leaving it in the bathroom though, and not putting it in other areas of the house.  People do that? That seems strange to me lol.

  • I haven't even thought about it, but I think we'll start with the potty chair and then go to the chair attachment.

  • We will start with the potty chair also.  DD loves to sit on things so I think this is going to be the best way to approach it when we start.  I agree though that I don't want to be cleaning out the little potty all the time so once she gets a little better at it I would move her to the big potty.  We have SD most of the time so I don't want to worry about taking the attachment on and off all the time yet.

  • I plan on using a potty chair to start. Once we do start training, and he gets the hang of at least using the chair, then I'll get the seat attachment. And I wouldn't put the chair in the living room, it would still be used in the bathroom as I feel like "pottying" should be done in the bathroom no matter what method is being used. :)

  • I feel like this is going to be one of those things where we may have one plan and the kid wants to go the other way.

I'm hoping to use the potty seat and avoid the chair but will probably buy one of the chairs that can be used as a seat in case DD doesn't want to start with the seat.

We plan to use the toilet from the get-go. (with the little insert, of course) Those little potty chairs gross me out beyond words. Also, I don't want to worry with the transition from potty chair to toilet. I've seen kids who refuse to use a regular toilet because they want the potty chair.

And this, like all things, is subject to change depending on what works for Aria.

For boys it doesn't quite control their spray, but I just point him down with my finger once he's starting to pee and that does the trick. I imagine eventually we'll teach him how to do it.

The built in feature is nice though to not have more garbage floating around my house.

If we get a potty chair we'll have to put it elsewhere because of our tiny bathroom. But right now I'm leaning towards the seat on the toilet.

  • I'm going to so a chair so she can do it herself.  If I do a seat on the toilet she can't get to it on her own and I think that is a big deal for kids, to be able to say they did it themselves.

It will be in the bathroom though...the idea of it anywhere else is creepy because in my house if it isn't in the bathroom it is in a "common" area...gross.

We wouldn't be able to fit it in the bathroom, it would probably either be in the hallway between the bathroom and her room, or in her room.

That works (although in the bedroom is still icky - I cannot handle the smell of wet diapers!).  The way my house is set up there isn't really a place to put it that isn't the bathroom, bedroom or living room.  Happily there is just barely enough room in the bathroom for it.

  • We have the potty chair we'll start with.  I like that it's his size so he can get on and off it more independently.   However, I'd kinda like him to use both so I'll probably get the insert for other toliets in the house.

I agree with potty chair being in the bathroom.  Even with the splash guard little boys splash.  I'd rather it splash on the bathroom floor than else where in the house.  I'm sure I'll clean up my fair share of ickiness without the potty in the living room.

This is what we planned on getting! And when we get around to having Jackson go potty on the toilet, we'll have him stand up on a stool and lean his hands forward on the toilet. That's how my sister taught her son because that's the way they did it at daycare. For those sending their little boys to daycare, I'd check with them and see how they have the boys go potty.

  • That's a really good idea about teaching him to stand while going! I was trying to wrap my head around that one for when we got to that point but I couldn't come up with anything. For now we put him up there and he sits but I don't know how long that will last at all.
