TTC after 35

New and Question!

Hello!  I am 42 and my DH is 44.  We have a beautiful, healthy 1 year old daughter.  We are so fortunate that I got pregnant on our first try (at age 40).

We are TTC #2, but have had no luck for the past 4 months.  I am observing CM and using OPKs.  I have not been charting, but I will begin this on my next cycle as I can see how helpful it can be.

My question to you all is what else I can do now.  Just keep trying?  Talk to the doctor?  Has anyone else had a difficult time conceiving #2?  I would love to hear any advice/experience.

Many thanks in advance!

Re: New and Question!

  • Typically doctors won't see a woman before six months of trying (one year if we were younger than 35), so keep trying for a couple months more at least. Beyond that, if I knew what else to do to be successful, I'd already be pregnant.  You were extremely lucky to get pregnant first try, that is not the norm at our age so trying for four months is not really much in the grand scheme of things.  I've been trying for nine months with a short pregnancy and loss in January, and I am just starting testing now (if this isn't my cycle), if that gives you any frame of reference. Best of luck to you.

Welcome! We conceived on our first try with numbers 1 & 2. Unfortunately we lost #2 in November at 14 weeks. When I went back to my OB for my post-D&E check up, he said if we don't conceive in 4 months to call him. I called him last month and he referred me to a RE. My OB is aggressive when it comes to his AMA patients though. I just turned 39 last week. I'd probably call and express your concern and let your doctor advise you from there.

    Best of luck!

  • Are you still breastfeeding, I know that will affect much, but other than that what all the other ladies said, I wish you good luck. I have been trying for 2 years - but I hope you don't experience that.

  • Welcome. I hope your stay is short and sweet.

Check in with your OBGYN to let them know you are trying and to get the information about who they suggest as a RE as soon as you can. I hope you won't need it but having the information now will help in the long run. When I was looking into the RE for my medical insurance they were booking new people two months out. Charting is a wonderful way to start the whole process. Take it in to see the doctor if you go.

    Good Luck.

Thanks for the welcome and support, everyone!

I am still nursing my child twice a day.  Does that affect ovulation and chances of conception?

Best of luck to you all, too!

Yes, breastfeeding, even if it's just once or twice a day, can still have an effect on your cycles, hormones, ovulation, etc.  BFing can mean you might not ovulate until months after you've fully weaned, or it can delay O or make it hard to pinpoint if/when it does actually happen.  I know women on these boards have often commented on how hard it is to chart and pinpoint O while BFing, just because their cycles are a bit on the wonky side.

There is a breastfeeding board here on the bump where you might get more info/advice about TTC while BFing. Good luck.

    All ALers welcome!

  • It took us 2 months for #1(I was 33), 6 months for #2(I was 35) and we are getting ready to give up on #3 after 18+ months (I'm now 38). I remember feeling like the 6 mo it took for DS were unbearably long, in retrospect, it really wasn't. That said, you are 42. I would have a chat with your doctor and explore your options.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Pibaby,

I don't have any advice for you in regards to TTC#2, I don't have any children.  I just wanted to wish you the best in your journey.  Sounds like you are off to a good start with all the tools that you are using and adding in the charting, great way to see your fertility window.

Yes, keep trying and talk to your doctor in the meanwhile.  It can take a bit to get your appt., and by then, you will be at the 6 month mark, so you are on track.

Best of luck to you and hope that you get your BFP real soon!

Lilypie Trying to Conceive 15 to 80 day cycle tickers
  • Hey,

I also got pregnant with my son on our first cycle post D&C (I had a miscarriage--got pregnant on my 3rd cycle for that pregnancy), right before my 40th birthday. Now, at 41, it's been about 3 months of trying when I think the "good days" are, but I haven't stepped up to charting and temping yet. I saw my oby/gyn today for my yearly appointment, and we're going to start with bloodwork, an ultrasound to make sure that my uterus is okay and there isn't scarring or anything that might be a result of the c-section I had last year, and I'm going for a bunch of bloodwork in a few days (I just started my period, so the timing worked out). After that, a hysterosalpingiogram???? to check my tubes. If that all checks out, my OB suggested Clomid (monitored, of course), which surprised me, given my age. If that doesn't work, IUI, then IVF (fortunately, my insurance covers both).

My husband and I are going to start with the preliminary testing and I'm going to keep up with my acupuncture and supplements, and keep losing the baby weight I can't seem to shake. I am not desperate to start with stepped-up measures just yet, but at 41, I also realize I might need a little help to have another baby. Whatever needs to be done, I will do.

     Good luck!
