baby rolling over at night?

hi ladies-

baby boy started rolling over a week ago - as of yesterday he taught himself how to roll from belly back to his back, so we considered it a good day! unfortunately now he's started to roll in his sleep from back to belly (or i should say from side to belly since he seems to love side sleeping). he's swaddles only from the chest down so both arms are free. however he keeps waking himself up in the night when he goes onto his belly - dh and i don't know if he scares himself or if he's just uncomfortable. but he's not putting himself back to sleep. we tried a little bit of CIO last night and it did not go well. any ideas? should we try sleeping him unswaddled to see if he can roll back onto his back? it just stinks bc he kicks his legs constantly so the swaddle helps chill him out at bedtime. any ideas would be awesome - we just started having some good nights and now i'm afraid that we're headed for disaster again haha (especially since DD now looks like she's going to start rolling soon). THX!

Re: baby rolling over at night?

  • Not sure about the swaddle because we never used one. However, DD woke up on her belly crying for about a week before she worked it out. Then she either rolled back over or slept on her belly.

    We transitioned E from a swaddle to merlin's magic sleep suit.  It keeps her on her back, and keeps her from kicking her legs, but her arms and legs are loose and not swaddled.  It was a miracle for us, and is the only way she can STTN.

    This happened with my lil guy too. When he started rolling over at night we switched to using a sleep sack. I agree with pp. It takes them a little bit to work it out so he may be up often for the next several night until he figures out what he wants and how to do that. Once my LO did, he only sleeps on his stomach and sleeps all night.nbsp;Good luck! nbsp;

    Same here. I'd work on getting him completely out of the swaddle first. Unfortunately, you may be in for a few rough nights until he figures out the joys of belly sleeping!! Our LOs now roll the second we lay them down. One of my little guys struggled for a few nights and the other didn't have any issues. Now, they both sleep on their tummies with their little bottoms in the air.

  • Just to echo what PPs have said - it took M about 1 week before he got completely comfortable with sleeping on his belly!  During that week it was bad, esp the first few days (for naps) and nights.  We had to let him CIO and the first night he cried on/off for an hour before he fell asleep.  For naps, he was crying for 15-20 mins before he fell asleep and woke up 10 minutes later on his belly and cried again.

    Eventually he got used to it and it is definitely his preferred position to sleep these days!  Hang in there and it'll get better.

    P.S. we transitioned M from swaddle to a sleepsack.

  • We switched to the Sleep Sack without swaddling when DS started rolling. He actually slept a lot better once he was allowed to sleep on his belly. I would stop swaddling and find whatever works for you now. After a few days he should figure it out, but until then you might have to get up and give him a little roll during the night. GL!

    Is it ok to allow them to sleep on their bellies now? I've been so afraid of SIDS....when does that supposedly decrease? thanks ladies for all the info - i'm going to go get sleep sacks today

    Once the babies can roll over, there's really nothing you can do to keep them on their backs.  Supposedly when they are strong enough to roll over, they're strong enough to keep themselves from suffocating.

    SIDS rate starts to go down at 4 months, and become negligible by 6 months.

    M started rolling back to tummy just before he turned 4 months.  Trust me, it worried me to no end for the first couple of weeks!  We were going to evict him to his room at 4 months, but we ended up keeping him in our room for 2 extra weeks so we could be close by when he slept on his tummy.

  • I would stop with the swaddle at this point. If he can roll that much and kicks that much he will likely break free from the swaddle entirely soon. I wouldn't want that blanket loose in the crib with him.

    It may take a few days for him to figure out how to roll back over or self sooth when he awakes at night, but I'd keep him in the crib for sure.
