Pregnant after 35

Headaches?

I am 10 weeks today with 1st (I am 38) and have had MS (nausea) 24/7,  but now over the last week have been getting horrible headaches almost every day on top of MS.  Not dehydrated, eating plenty, still working out daily, sleeping as much as can, taking prenatals, taking B6.  Is anyone else getting headaches daily? Is this normal?  Tylenol does nothing.

Re: Headaches?

  • It's normal. I had it my entire 2nd trimester. My grandmother used to get them, too, when she was pregnant.

Ask your OB about Fiorcet. It's a combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol), a little caffeine, and butalbital (a baby-safe barbituate). It's safe for pregnancy, but not something they'll always give you without any oversight because of the barbituate component. It was the only thing that worked for me, and usually it never took more than 2 doses to completely rid me of my headache.

Headaches are common. I'm sorry Tyenol doesn't help, it was enough for me. Definitely don't hesitate to call your DR.

  • Oh my goodness. This is totally me. I have had a headache/migraine since last Sunday on top of nausea. I was just taking Tylenol and using ice packs with rest. , I had to come home from work early and Tuesday I left early to see an urgent clinic. They gave my hydrocodone with Tylenol. I took just a 1/2 pill last night and it helped for like 3 hours. I'm going to try accupuncture next on the advice of a friend. My husband woke up with a sinus headache, so maybe it is a combo of pregnancy and sinuses?  (We are in North Texas)  It is so hard to work with these. Just to get my hair done is a chore.

  • I am right there with you! I am 6 weeks today.  I am 40.  I have had to take tylenol the past 2 days and they dont' really seem to help.  I've been creeping other boards and trying to find out if headaches are normal.  This is my third pregnancy.  My older two are 17 and 13.  Honestly, I can't remember having headaches with my first two.  Then again, I was a lot younger.

Thanks ladies! Glad to know I am not alone. I did go see my neuromuscular massage therapist because I couldn't take it any longer (she would only work on my neck until after 1st tri and is super educated about pregnancy and massage - so felt it was safe) Anyway, it helped a ton. Not completely gone, but much less intense.  A little relief!
  • That's good to hear.  :)  Hope you feel better...

  • I had it for the first few weeks but seemed to go away about week 7. Still getting them occasionally but at least it's not 247.

Just a quick update I thought I would share in case it can help anyone else suffering from really bad headaches.

My OB also gave me a prescription for Fiorcet (SP? - I can't read her writing very well) for the headaches when they are completely brutal and tylenol doesn't help. She also suggested taking Zyrtec daily for a couple of weeks to see if it may be more allergy related.

I'd prefer not to take anything if I can but there have been a couple that were crippling that definitely would have taken the prescription for. Getting it filled today ICE.
