Daycare Vent

Sorry--Just have to vent for a minute...

It seems like my son has been sick with something since he started daycare.  I kind of knew this would happen, but it is exhausting.  Tuesday morning my daycare called frantically because they noticed blisters on 2 of his fingers and 2 on his upper lip.  So they said I needed to come get him right away and take him to the doctor.  So I take him in and he has a very mild of hand foot and mouth..doctor said if he doesn't get anymore spots that day than he probably wasn't going to and she thought if that were the case he wasn't that contagious anyway and could go back to daycare.  I contemplated asking her for a note saying that...but knew it wouldn't fly.  Our daycare is very strict on all of that..which I get, dont get me wrong...but they said that all spots have to be completely gone, not just scabbed over.  Ok fine..we will deal with that even though I'm fairly new in my position and do not have any PTO built up yet.  Well I completely forgot that today was Friday--payday--my days have been all mixed up since he hasn't been to daycare most of the week.  So I texted our provider (it is an in home daycare run by 2 women) and explained that I forgot and apologized and asked if it would be ok to drop off a check right after work.  She sent one back saying that they needed it by noon so she could go to the bank.  Um WTH?  First, I'm not taking unpaid time off to come drop off a check in the middle of the day and Second..I pay you to be with my child at all times, from the time I drop him off until I pick him up...not so you can run to the bank during nap time..I dont care if there are 2 of them there...I'm so livid..I havent even responded yet.  I get that it is my fault I forgot...but it's not like I am asking to not pay her for a week for something...I honestly dont know what to say to them..I'm more mad about the fact that she leaves during the day to run to the bank than anything...I can deal with the inconvenience of wanting a check by noon...

Re: Daycare Vent

  • My home day-care provider is very flexible when it comes to her pay.  I usually pay on Monday mornings, but if I forget for some odd reason, I just bring it the next day (or after work). No big deal.   Sorry you have to deal with that...I'd be po'd also and I would not leave work to get her the check by noon (I would be apologetic and I would hope that they would understand).  GL!

  • How old is DS?  I would be frustrated by what you are experiencing.  The CDC says HFM is contagious for one week, so I would definitely expect daycare to keep your child away for a full week.  As far as the DC provider going to the bank, it's annoying that she can't just do it after business on Friday or on Saturday morning.  But as long as the state limits are met for children to teachers, there is no reason she can't leave your child there with just one provider.

    Yes, this.

As a child, I went to an in-home daycare.  She would take us to the bank, sometimes to the store....  I was even asked (for a few days, until my mom chewed her out) to do her daughter's paper route!  While there are many great in-home daycares, as PP said, as long as state limits are met, she can go to the bank.  If you're uncomfortable with this, you may want to look at a center.

This. While I get your frustrations, she's not in the wrong, at all.

  • I totally get them not wanting him there...I dont want other kids getting sick either.  I dont get paid to run my errands during my work day...so it bugs me that she thinks that it is ok...it is definitely something she could be doing after the kids are gone for the day..Anyway...i'm starting to get over it..the main thing is that they have always been good with him and to him and he likes it there...and ultimately that is what is important.

Some people do. It comes with the flexibility of working from home. If you don't like it, look into day care centers.

Okay but you have the ability to take an unpaid break and run to the store/bank during break from work, she however cannot. Furthermore most banks close around 5-6 depending on her hours of work she may not be able to get their on Friday night when they are open.
The HMF thing, I would be pissed if my kid got it from another child when they parent knew outright that they had it.

  • I actually can't leave the hospital and take an unpaid break during the day...and banks are open on Saturdays...I would also not bring him to daycare with this and intentionally expose other children...would it be nice to catch a break after having to take so much time off work the last few months to care for my little sicky...absolutely...but not at the expense of other little kiddos..

And would if she was counting on that money for something that night.

  • Well I guess since I would have had her money to her by 4:30 and she closes at 5 she would have still had time to get to the bank...and since she charges 1 per minute for any child that is left after 5..all parents are there well before that.
