Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Spitting up.

It seems like my LO is spitting up all the time. She's 16 weeks and loves to eat. Is it that she eats too much (7oz bottles at a time) or is it the formula. I was thinking of trying rice cereal soon. Doc wants to wait til shes 4 months, but that's next week. What do you think?

Re: Spitting up.

  • Is the spitting up new?  Or has it always happened?  Are we talking about just spitting up or is she like emptying her stomach?

FWIW, spitting up is common and normal.  It tends to peak about now.  If it has always happened and it's a concerning amount I would just keep up what you're doing.  But I'm not a fan of introducing solids prior to 6 months anyway.

  • Gaining weight, meeting milestones, and seem mostly happy/comfortable?  If so, she's probably just a "happy spitter".  They outgrow it as muscles strengthen.

  • Four months would be the very earliest, if your LO shows signs of readiness (sitting up with assistance, taking a spoon, showing interest in food, loss of tongue thrust). I would wait on solids personally, unless my LO had ALL of these signs, and wasn't seeming satisfied.

On the spitting up, it's really common. 7oz is a lot for such a young LO, she must have quite the appetite lol! My LO is constantly burping some liquid out, but she isn't in pain so I'm not worried.

This, DS has been spitting up more then usual but it never seems to bother him...and he is gaining weight like crazy so I'm not worried about it. I'm sure they will outgrow it soon.

DD has been spitting up more often, but she eats the same, she's happy and so I'm not really worrying about it. I have heard it peaks around 4 months.
