December 2011 Moms

A lot of babbling without words

Is anyone else's LO still not really talking?  DD is very vocal and expressive, but she isn't really saying any words.  She says mama the most, although many times it's "ma-ma-ma-ma" and occasionally she says hi, bye-bye, and dada.  She definitely understands simple commands and shakes her head no if she doesn't want something.

She just turned 17 months old and I've heard that there's often a word explosion at 18 months.  I'm just wondering does it really happen almost overnight?

Re: A lot of babbling without words

  • DS is pretty much the same way, I'm not too worried since he is communicating in other ways and is making new sounds. I don't think I would worry :) I think if they're not making any sounds or communicating then it's a red flag but that's just me and what I've been reading.

DS pretty much just started talking. He mostly only says "ya" in response to questions he understands though. If he doesn't want it, he doesn't say anything. He has also started trying to repeat words we say. But like I said all this just started. My cousin is a speech path and she said not to worry until they don't have a certain amount of words by 20 months, but I can't remember the number. I will have to ask her again.

I love that your son says "ya."  The only time C has ever said "yes" was when I asked her if she wanted to watch Mickey or if she wanted her paci.  The only word she has consistently said is "no," and she says it to most questions I ask her.  :)  In response to the original question, she only says a few words and babbles the rest of the time.  I think it's normal!

    All of this! :-)

  • DS2 is the same. He can only say, mama, dada, ya, and riley (our dogs name).

Other than that its a lot of talking with no real words, Which is hilarious and great! No worries it does seem to hit all at once. I remember DS1 going from babbling to words to sentences super fast.

Hi coming out as a lurker on the board again. I usually stop in and read posts but don't post much anymore. Anyways my son is the same way he literally will babble for like 20 mins using hand gestures pointing at things but only says about 5 words right now. Thats mama, papa, bye bye, baba (binky) or blanket, bird. He understands everything we say and also takes commands so I am not worried either. It was weird to be around another 17 month old girl at a restaurant the other day she was talking a lot more than my son. I kind of had a doubting moment like oh is he really behind?  However then my son started waving and engaging with her and she really didn't respond back so I think every child grows in different ways at their own pace.

DD2 still isn't talking a whole lot either. She has maybe a dozen or so words, but recently she added ya and a head nod as a response to things she wants and no and a head shake when she doesn't want something. It's amazing how helpful that little bit of communication is! DD1's language truly exploded around 18ish months, and it really did seems like it happened overnight. She went from saying maybe 15 words, to saying so many things I really couldn't count them.

  • DS is the same way - has a few of the basic words down but that's it.  His favorite word is "more".  :)

I'm not worried because he understands everything.  If you ask him to go do something he will.

DS doesn't speak much at all either, we actually got worried enough that we got a specialist to come see him, as he hadn't learnt any new words since he turned a year though. She was concerned enough to put him on the language specialist waiting list, but he really wasn't talking at all, he would nod his head and shake his head for yes and no, but not actually open his mouth to speak.

That was 3 weeks ago, she gave us some tools on how to get him to verbalise, and now he is saying Ya for yes (although still not saying no, just shaking his head LOL), and he is verbalising so much, there are no more words yet, but you can see him trying, and all he wants to do is look at his picture books and point to what I am naming, it is amazing the difference a few weeks makes. I am hoping words will be following shortly, so we can cancel the specialist.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!  As a FTM, it's hard to know sometimes when you should or shouldn't be worried.  We're also expecting DD#2 next month so I'm trying to decide whether I need to get a jump on this before I get caught up and exhausted again with the new baby.  ;-)
