Waking up with baby at night

It seems that I am such a sound sleeper that I always sleep through his fussing and noises.  DH is always waking up to his every sound.  My H wont wake me unless Gus is hungry.

We have him sleeping in our room at the foot of the bed in the PnP and I can't hear him.  This has me worried.  In the hospital I heard his every tiny squeak and grunt and noticed his every movement.  But why not at home??

Is it my body just catching up on lost sleep time??   ugh...I feel so guilty that I don't hear my baby at night :(

I guess I should get off the Ambien for my baby arrives! But normally I can hear everything. You're probably just exhausted.

  • Do you live in a noisy area?  Sleep with a fan on?  Any background noise drowning out the baby?

It's OK to not wake at every peep and grunt.   In fact, some mommas would LOVE to have that happen.  Waking up constantly can be exhausting.

As long as you wake up when things get "real"...  i.e. serious crying, you are probably fine.

In time, you will learn each other and it will all work out.

  • I had a similar thing happen last night. DH seemed upset that i managed to sleep through her fussing for an hour. But she wasn't crying, and he had her, so I don't feel so badly about it. Her cradle is also on his side of the bedroom so he hears her first. if he needed me or food was the issue he'd have woken me i hope. we''ll work it out when we get in a rhythm.

Amen.  Babies make a ton of noise in their sleep.  A lot of times they just need a minute or two to get resettled.  Not getting up/feeding at every peep teaches babies to fall back asleep on their own.  I am not saying let your kid cry by any means this early in the game.  We moved DD to the hallway after a few weeks because she would wake me up with her sleepy noises.  I would count yourself lucky for now .

This.  I wish I could sleep through the fussing, since they aren't really awake at that point.  I have one who goes straight to screaming and one who fusses all night long.  It all wakes me up.  As long as you are waking for actual crying, I'd say count your blessings.

  • For me it definitely depends on how tired I am. If I'm not too tired, I'll wake up from every little sound she makes. If I'm exhausted, though, I won't hear a lot of it. I've also noticed that I'm getting used to the different sounds she makes at night, and I'm learning to filter out her regular grunts and only wake up to the whining that I know will lead to crying.

I think I am definitely starting to recognize his regular noises and his I'm about to cry and be upset noises.

I do wake up when he crie.

  • I think it is just your body catching up on sleep. The days that I was really exhausted I could never hear DD and she slept next to my side of the bed.
