CA girls

This summer MH and I are going to Hawaii. He works for a large company and when he hits/exceeds his goals, he gets trips. We'll get 5 days in Maui, but since it takes so long to get there, we're considering stopping in CA for a couple of days to break up the trip. We've been to Hawaii once before, and the journey there sucked! If we are spending 2 to 3 days in CA, where would you recommend going? I've always wanted to go to Napa, but we're ttc and I really want to go there when I can enjoy the wine! Maybe San Francisco, San Diego, somewhere else? I've never been, so I'm clueless. Any input would be appreciated.

TIA!

I am a total CAphile and a native Angelino and love everything about my state. The best thing about it is that there's something for everyone. It really depends on what your interests are and what you want to see. Do you want to go to Disneyland, or lounge on Agate Beach up north where the redwoods meet the ocean? There is so much to do here. What sorts of things do you have in mind?

  • Are you traveling with a toddler or is this an adult trip?  Do you have an airline preference,  because they tend to have fixed routes out of designated cities to the Hawaii islands so that also affects how much time you want hopping around airports.  I would tend to think you could do either SoCal LA/San Diego or SF/Napa and although I am partial to SF, if you're bringing your girl, SoCal has more big entertainment options like Legoland, Seaword, DisneyLand and the famous SD Zoo and museums.

It will be just MH and me. This will be our first time away from P for more than a night. My mom will stay at our house with her so I know she will be fine, but it still stresses me out. Given that P won't be with us and we'll get plenty of sunny beach time in Maui, I'm thinking northern California would be more our speed. In terms of flights, we just have to tell his company's travel agent where we want to go and they work out the itinerary for us.

  • As a NorCal girl, I recommend that if you're in CA for an adults only trip.  There are lots of fun places and fantastic restaurants in San Fran.  Plus, you can get around with public transportation there and not need to rent a car for a few days.

This. Though I love my LA I went to college in San Francisco and I agree that it's a great area for an adult trip!

  • I'm on the periphery of the Bay Area so I tend to think of myself as a SF tourist rather than a local, but SF is an awesome city to explore, especially if you are into food and cultural attractions.  You can spend a day or so staying in the city and getting around on foot and public transportation and then you can rent a car for a day and head north about an hour to visit the redwoods and/or Napa/Sonoma valley.  Besides the scenery and vineyards, there's spas and restaurants galore to keep you entertained even if you are not drinking.  There's also places that specialize in growing olives and offer olive oil tastings.

  • I've been to San Diego and San Fran and I would do Northern Cal any day of the week. I loved it there!! SoCal was nice, but San Fran was more my speed.

When I went to HI with my family we went to San Francisco first and spent a few days there.  It's beautiful and there is a lot to do.  Just beware, it can be cold there even in the summer so you'd have to pack warm stuff and cold stuff!

  • I'm not a CA girl, but a few years ago H and I went to San Diego and then drove to LA and Santa Barbara.  We absolutely loved Santa Barbara.  I am not sure if that is doable, but I seriously loved that place and am dying to go back.

Thanks for the info ladies! It looks like the consensus is northern CA. I'll probably have a lot more questions as we begin our planning, so I may reach out to you again.
