CIO please share your success stories

I just did this for the first time tonight, and I feel like a terrible mommy :( I know DS doesn't think this, but I can't help but feel like he thought I was neglecting him!

it took about 40 minutes, but he's down and asleep on his own.

he used to be an amazing sleeper, sttn at 11 weeks, but got sick 3 weeks ago and then an ear infection and sleep has been not existent ever since. Since he's all better, I decided it was time....but that still doesn't make me feel any better about it!

i should mention that we've always had a set bedtime routine since night one.

please share your experiences!

Did it for the first time at 5 months after she had a sleep regression and again at 9 1/2 months after another sleep regression. Both times required about an hour of crying in the MOTN, but after that one night she went back to STTN. It was hard on me, but well worth it, and she didn't seem affected at all! GL

  • i was going to respond on your june post, but figured it was already a touchy subject on that board so i will answer on here! :)

my LO did exactly what yours did... he went through a major sleep regression at 10/11 months due to an ear infection and teething. when i got the all clear from the pedi, i decided to let him CIO when he woke in the middle of the night after i checked on all his needs. it was HORRIBLE, but didn't last long.

it worked! the next night, i heard him cry/scream for maybe 5 seconds and then back to sleep on his own. by the time, i got to his room, he was back to sleep. we just reached our third night of STTN. it feels amazing for everyone. i will never take STTN for granted again.

  • We're about a week in and it has been great!  He goes down easy, on his own, without a peep now. We used to have to rock him to sleep for nearly one hour, and he would often cry when we put him in the crib. He does still wake up once to feed, and since he is small (9%) due to a heart defect (now corrected), I still feed him once a night.  I'm gonna wean him from that motn feeding by his 1st birthday. He used to wake up about 4-6 times throughout the night and now he only wakes up once.  I consider this a great success!

  • We did CIO with DS.  Then we had to do more sleep training when he was two and decided to start coming in to our room a hundred times a night.  The first few nights are hard, no doubt about it.  Try to remember how important sleep is for everything.  We function better, learn better, eat better, make better choices, are more patient with the kids when we have enough sleep.  Kids need enough sleep to grow their little brains.  You can do it!

Our story is very similar to this. The second time around, I used headphones to get through it, and it worked like a charm. Now, he pretty much sleeps through anything at night. He actually has a stuffy, runny nose right now, and I was worried it would cause night wakings last night, but he slept like a log from 8p.m. until about 6:45a.m. It will be worth it in the end!

  • It is hard, but it does work.

I did a post on my blog about our experience. It took us about 2 weeks to get it down.

  • I was very reluctant to try CIO.  My LO was sleeping in bed with me and he would move or wake me up quite frequently.  I was terrified about letting him CIO so I really delayed even trying it.  About 3 weeks ago I started and it has been going great, but I guess I'm not really doing CIO as some people do.  I rock him to sleep and put him down when he is pretty sleepy.  He sometimes will cry for less than 5 minutes but usually not at all.  He is now sometimes sleeping through the night (well until 5:30 am).  If he wakes up during the night, I let him cry for 5 minutes max.  After that, I go in there and feed him.  I first also look and if he is lying down, I might wait a few extra minutes.  If he is sitting up or standing up, it is unlikely he will settle himself so I go in. I know the situation is not ideal, but I am 100x happier than a few weeks ago!

  • If you're happy with your decision to CIO, I wish you the best of luck.

It sounds, though, like you might be unsure whether this is the right path for you. If you're interested in some other options, we've done WIO with our daughter, and she is making a lot of progress in her own time. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.
