putting LO to bed crying...

Most nights LO is rocked to sleep by either me or DH and gets laid in bed sound asleep.  But some nights, and for every single nap he screams his head off for maybe 1 to 3 minutes when I put him down.  I'm trying to keep a loose schedule for him, because I read that is good for babies/children, but the screaming and crying is nerve wrecking to say the least.  Am I doing the right thing?? or should I just let  him be up when he wants to be up, and put him to bed once he falls asleep?  What are you mamas doing??

  • I guess I should add, I'm worried about his well being.  Not just my nerves!!!

  • Yeah, I never pick him back up, I just walk out of the room.  But I can still hear him from the livingroom :(

Do what you are comfortable with, but I would not pick up my LO after only a minute of crying. Obviously if he is sick or teething I might rock him to sleep, but we let him fuss it out for a bit. That was months ago though. At this point we put him down wide awake after his first eye rubbing since it is a clear sign that he is tired. I find the times he does cry are ones where we let him get over tired. But yeah, at this point we put him in his crib in a sitting position and he right away nestles into his blankets and falls asleep within minutes. It took a bit of work to get to that point but it is heavenly. Good luck!! Eta: I found the best thing to so when crying it out was to go to a different floor of the house so I could hardly hear him. Made it easier otherwise I would cave. Also always had a time limit. First few nights he cried 15 mins but then it got lower and lower until he just doesn't cry anymore. If he's not tired he just plays in the crib now.

I agree with this. Especially the bolded part. She'll scream bloody murder for 1-2 mins then pass out if she is over tired and I missed her cues for being tired. Otherwise she's pretty good. We had a period where it was worse because her cues changed from what they were as a newborn, so it took some adjustment for me to "get it". Now I think we're on the same page because it's not as often.

I have had her scream for longer, but I go get her. Usually means her ears are bothering her (we still deal with regular ear infections), her teeth, or once because she woke up from a nightmare I think. Then we cuddle it out instead of cry it out. Otherwise, I let her go because she's just too tired to know what to do with herself and there's nothing I can do to help her anyway, staying up with her would just make her more tired and more cranky. It works for us and we're comfortable with those choices.

I don't consider 1-3 minutes to be CIO.  DD will cry for about that long some nights.  By the time I get to the bottom of the stairs, she is fast asleep.

  • I guess I'm the odd one out I HATE letting my kids cry themselves to sleep. I don't do that until their older and even then not often. They're only babies for such a short time I'll cuddle them to sleep as long as they need. Nathan was 16 months before he started going down awake.
