Eh, maybe six to ten receiving blankets? They can be reused for swaddling barring blowouts. And they only work for swaddling when baby is teeny, except for the Aden n Anais ones, but I believe those are actually caled swaddle blankets. I have no idea what brand we got.
Lots and lots of burp cloths. Like, thirty. We had a spitter and she would go through several a day. We used the Gerber prefold or flatfold cloth diapers as burp cloths.
You can never have a enough receiving blankets, they are multiple purpose and use them for just about everything. I'll say 10 is plenty. We didn't buy burp cloths this time around, I'll be using receiving blankets for everything. They are always near me and handy.
I just used receiving blankets for everything. We had three burp cloths, but the larger receiving blankets were more versatile. We had about 10-12 in rotation, and I only did laundry 1-2 times a week. DD did not have a lot of spit/reflux, though, if she did, I probably would have bought 3-4 more to have on hand.
For me personally this is baby 5 and I have found that having 1015 blankets of various sizes worked best and 20 of the Gerber pre fold or flat cloth diapers for burp rags. This is just my opinion and you will need to see what works for you and LO the best
We used the smallish receiving blankets for: -changing pad cover on the PnP -burp cloths -blanket while in car seat or RnP -setting on floor/sofa when putting LO down
We didn't use them for swaddling -- the flannel Carters ones just really aren't a good size.
If you have a spitter or a lot of blowouts, all of those are potentially one-use-then-wash uses. If you don't have a spitter or heavy pooper, you can get by with fewer.
I want to say we had 10-15 of the Carters flannel ones. Some weeks we seemed to use them all, and other weeks we didn't.
I didn't use receiving blankets for a whole lot of things. I used the nicer ones for light blankets while running errands and burp clothes for the hand-me-down ones. I think I had 4 nice ones, but probably could have gotten away with 2. And had about 6 burp cloth ones - which seemed fine.
I used regular swaddle blankets for swaddling. I could never get the receiving blankets to work right as swaddles. And for playing, we had other thicker blankets.

I never used receiving blankets. I used the gerber flat diapers for spit ups and just a regular chamois blanket in the car, etc. When we swaddled him, we used the Halo sleep sacks. My son was born in February so a receding blanket was too light to use for cover. I don't think I'll get any this time around either.
I had WAY too many receiving blankets. As pp said they only work for swaddling in the beginning. I used flat diapers for burp clothes and still use the same ones now as after meal wipers for both kids. We needed tons of burp clothes for DD but DS almost never spit up.

This. I wasn't given any burp cloth, so we just used the flannel blankets. Worked out just fine.

Eek, now I'm feeling totally under prepared. I only have 4 of the flannel Carter receiving blankets and 4 of the A&A muslin blankets. And 12 prefold diapers to use as burp clothes. Looks like I'll be hitting up Target later to bulk up my stash!

It depends on what you plan to use them for.

We have zero receiving blankets but have 12 Aden and Anais swaddling blankets. They are much more versatile, IMO, due to their large size.
We have 16 burp clothes, specifically the Under the Nile ones. We accumulated that many b/c DS1 was a constant spitter upper. I love those things!
