Verdict on pineapple?

Okay, so I've been craving pineapple and lemons something fierce. I eat at least one lemon per day (sometimes two), and about a half pineapple per day. I thought this was totally acceptable (better than craving donuts or something, right?) until my aunt jumped down my throat about how eating pineapple could cause premature labor and kill the baby.

Hold the phone. What?!

You'd think if pineapple was that dangerous, my OB would've had it on that big list of things to avoid, right? I looked online and I'm getting various signals here; some say pineapple is sure to cause miscarriage or preterm labor, and others say pineapple is totally fine, as long as you don't eat the core.

Do you ladies have any personal experience to share? Or have any of you even heard of this?

Re: Verdict on pineapple?

  • I have been craving pineapple and watermelon since week 14.  I actually randomly came across something on the internet the other day that said pineapple might cause pre-term labor, but I don't know how reputable that is.  I had never heard not to eat pineapple.  Have not had a chance to ask the doctor, but it's not on my list of things to avoid.  I'm not eating it everyday, but I still do eat it sometimes. I think the 'foods to look out for' list is getting out of control.

  • I've heard of people eating pineapple later on to induce labor but didnt think anything of it for now. I downed so much pineapple in Hawaii!

Never heard of that, and it sounds like an OWT. I wouldn't put too much weight on WebMD or those other sources. I've been eating pineapple like crazy too!

  • I told my OB I was eating pineapple and he didn't say anything about it. Just that my glucose levels were high.
  • If your OB didn't say anything about it, I would take anything anybody says, including other bumpies with a grain of salt.

Some things are common sense, and other things I swear one pregnant woman somewhere ate a tainted pineapple or aloe juice or used weird sunblock or WHATEVER, the Internet got a hold of it and turned it into a big nono.

In my opinion, if my OB didn't say it, I'm not listening.
  • Okay. So it sounds like we all pretty much agree that it's not the end of the world if I eat pineapple. <huge sigh of relief>

And I totally agree that the list of foods not to eat has gotten out of control. If all the old wives tales were true, we'd be stuck eating applesauce and plain toast for the rest of our pregnancies!

Thanks for easing my worries, ladies!

And as soon as we all switched to apple sauce and toast, someone would link a study that says apples are terrible for pregnant women and that toast can make your unborn child blind. There is no winning in this game! Lol. Eat that pineapple, girl!

Don't some women eat pineapple core to help get pregnant? I haven't heard anything about this before either.

Yeah. Something about how it softens the cervix enough to allow for implantation. But too much softening can cause you to efface early and contract.

My thoughts exactly minus Hawaii you lucky girl!!

Eat that pineapple girl and enjoy it!

  • I'm late to this thread but I actual did some intense research on pineapple because it's my favorite food lol
They used to use excessive amounts of pineapple juice to cause miscarriage. I can't remember for they life of my the thing in pineapple that does it, but it takes a lot of it to cause miscarriage. So yes, in theory it could cause pre mature labor but they were drinking gallons of juice at once, not enojying some pineapple for lunch. You have to ingest A LOT to cause harm. A couple gallons of juice would take dozens of pineapples to make and they would have to be eaten all at once.

Yeah it's to help with IVF treatments after they "implant" the embryos back in. Good thinking.

Ooh. That makes sense! Thank goodness I'm not eating six pineapple per day or drinking the juice by the gallon, lol. And were you talking about bromelain?

  • Ever notice that it's all the natural foods that come up as souring the pot on the internet? How come there are no studies that tell us to avoid burgers and fries, or boxed chicken nuggets, or anything else manufactured?

I get that it is foods that grow naturally that also contain natural medicinal properties, but if this were true about pineapple, then there are a  lot of Southern Hemisphere countries that I suspect  would be barren! lol

  • I've never heard of pineapple causing premature labor, but it and grapefruit make it difficult for your body to absorb medications and multivitamins. I always make sure to take my vitamins several hours before or after I eat pineapple.

  • I would be concerned aboutvall the citric acid and teeth. My hubby loves to eat limes, but it destroyed the enamel on his teeth ( that and multiple cokes).

  • The only place I have ever read this is actually on the bump, somebody had posted about it before.  I think its pretty well false.  Maybe unelss you're eating boxes of pineapples a week possibly.

I have been eating pineapple and I'm still pregnant, in fact, anything citrusy has been my domain.

I've never heard of it either but I have eaten fresh pineapple a few times since I've been pregnant.  I love it!

  • MY verdict on pineapple is that it's delicious! DH and I ate tons of it on our trip to Maui that we just came home from.
