Trouble TTC

TI vs IUI

I had a pregnancy blood test the other day and it was neg.  It was my second round of TI with Clomid + Inj + trigger.  The person drawing my blood asked if we were moving to IUIs.  If my husband's sperm is normal, what would the advantages be to doing IUIs vs timed intercourse?  My insurance covers NO IF treatments and meds so OOP, that's a steep difference....

I feel like we haven't even tried for very long to think we should start something different since it's only the second time.  I feel like we just started.

Re: TI vs IUI

  • I haven't gotten that far in my own journey yet, but I would guess that they don't want to keep you on Clomid for very long, and that they don't want to delay IUI because of age. A friend of mine went straight to IUI, skipping TI, at her doctor's suggestion because she was over 35. Might be a similar thing, but you could certainly ask them if there is a rush.

Thinking about it more, they are probably also used to women who want to push things forward as fast as possible, they may not be aware that you're in no rush to IUI. Can't hurt to have a convo with the doc about it.

My Dr said that since we are "unexplained" that IUI bypasses a lot of the potential problems for sperm getting through.

    Anniversary

  • Once I get AF, I think we are going to go ahead with TI.  In the meantime, I am going to set up an appointment with the Dr. to discuss next step.  It has been a while since we've sat down and I am sure he has more insight.  Man, if it wasn't for piss poor insurance (and you think it would be half decent since it is BCBS), I wouldn't have to be so scared to take the next step.  I salivate at the thought of IVF treatments being covered for a couple of tries!  I'd be on it like white on rice.

There are several reasons for IUI vs TI.  Mainly, if you've had a few medicated TI cycles failed, it's simply time to move on...but if you've only had one, I can see wanting to try one more.  Unless you've had a post coital test, you do not know if you have hostile PH in your CM killing off all the sperm - this would bypass that issue.  Also, if you have a stubborn or closed cervix, this bypasses that.  Also, just the sheer fact of getting past your cervix kills most of the sperm...this gets the best of the best where they need to be.  If you've never seen it, watch "The great sperm race" on YouTube and you'll get an idea of what I mean.  IUI gives you higher chances.  Those are the top four or five reasons I can think of.

This. Since we are also Unexplained, my RE said that honestly, there wasn't much of a point to do medicated cycles without IUI.  I understand completely if ccost is an issue - I might try to do a couple TI before moving on. That way you could at least put your mind at ease and know you tried before moving on to something more costly. For us, it was a cost/benefit analysis. IUI was more expensive than just meds, but it upped our chances by about 10%, so we went for it.  GL with your decision!
