October 2011 Moms

Ugh. Tornado sirens.

Our tornado sirens are going off. I think the city does it as a precaution when we have severe weather to cover their azzes.

The news is reporting that the sirens are going off, but they don't know why because there's not even a severe thunderstorm over us right now.

At what point, during a storm, will you get LO from peacefully sleeping in their bed to take cover?

  • Ohhhhh you're getting the remnants of our tornado warning now. Sorry! I would be watching the weather channel, have my safe room prepped with blankets, diapers, and a flashlight, and be ready to go grab the kid and pets in an instant. But not until I knew it was really serious.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

  • Despite my tremendous fears, I try really hard not to pull the trigger to early on waking my child. I usually have my weather apps up and checking constantly to watch storms to determine if we should head to the basement. I would say the common factor is usually the sound of hail.

  • If we had a tornado warning or if the wind was really picking up, I would go get her. Storms freak me out.

This is exactly what I did. Everything is ready, just in case.

It never fails that we get this weather when DH is OOT. He was supposed to fly in tonight and got diverted to OKC.  They are sitting on the tarmac for the next hour waiting for the storms to pass.

I hope everyone is ok!  I saw on the news that there were bad tornadoes in Dallas area last night.

  • Our siren is a block away so it is loud and you can not sleep through it.  We sleep in our lower level with Violet and I have the older two who sleep upstairs trained that if the siren goes off to take their blankets and sleep in the family room downstairs.  If I know it is a tornado waning I will stay up and let them know if we need to move under the steps.

Our sirens sound for any warning it seems...severe thunderstorm, tornadoes, etc.  I swear they sound sometimes for watches too, not just warnings, which drives me nuts.  I too keep any eye on the news/radio/weather apps and if there is an actual tornado sighting I'd wake T up and go to the basement.

Honestly, I might be more relaxed than I should be about it but I feel like our sirens cry wolf all the time and it makes them less urgent to me.

I stated it before, but last year while in MN, those f'uckers went off every time it even so much as rained, I swear.  Here, the sirens are get the hell in your shelter/basement NAO!  I had a hard time relaxing on what was supposed to be my vacation, especially with a 9 month old to scoop out of bed each time.

  • Late commenting on this but wanted to check on my fellow Texas girls to see how they handled the storms last night. We got a lot of rain and wind but no damage.

  • Yep. Us too. If there hadn't been deadly tornadoes to the south, I would say it was just a typical thunderstorm.

Shame on my city for sounding their sirens when it wasn't warranted.
