Stuttering

My almost 3 year old daughter has been stuttering on and off for about 6 months.  I read that it can be developmental and is normal especially between 2-5 years of age.  But just in the past few days it got really bad.  She is aware of it now and will say things like, "It's hard to talk" or "I'll say that later".  I'm thinking about having her evaluated by a speech/language pathologist.  Does anyone have any experience or expertise in this area?  Advice?

    As a preschool SLP, I can say that it sounds like it may be a good time to have her evaluated for stuttering. While it is true that most preschool children will stutter at some point, due to rapid language development between ages 2 and 5, a good rule of thumb is that if it lasts longer than six months, it may be more than just developmental. Also concerning is the fact that she is aware of it and demonstrating avoidance behaviors. It may continue to come and go, since stuttering is cyclical in nature, but it never hurts to have an evaluation and look a little deeper. Good luck!

    Thank you for your response! I also spoke with the pedi today and she said to get her evaluated in June. What do you recommend doing in the mean time? How do I address it when she gets frustrated?

    Another preschool SLP here. :) I suck at doing links on my iPad, but if you go to stutteringhelp.org, then click on "parents of preschoolers", there is a list of 7 tips for communicating with your child. It's such a great resource.

    Exactly what earlyspring said. Stutteringhelp.org has great tips. Their "7 tips for communicating with your child" sheet is one I often print and give to parents.
