Vacation Help

I have two weeks vacation that I saved instead of taking with my pto (which will probably piss alot of my co workers off but whatever). I'm thinking of taking it in September for the weather to be a little better plus Labor Day would fall on my two weeks so I could move a vacation day sometime this summer. All this to say, LO will be 6 months. Did you attempt anything with LO on your first year vacation if you had it or do you go solo or with DH for vacations? Obviously we will not be doing anything super awesome but I want to do SOMETHING! Any suggestions?

Re: Vacation Help

  • I did the same thing as you last year. We go to the beach every summer for a week with DH's family. Last summer we had DD age 2 and DS age 5months. It was a good family trip. Only a 2hr drive and we had family to help us with the kids.
I would not leave a 6month old baby for vacation. We actually just took our first trip without kids. DS is 15months and we left them with my mom for 5 days.

We went and visited friends in OH and di a lot of stuff there.

I think like PP said go to a lakehouse, or even a cabin in the mountains...depending on what you're near.  Since LO probably isn't too mobile that opens up your options where you won't have to chase him/her down the whole time. Since you have two weeks...and this is something I might do in that position...I would ask our parents first...but go home (we live out of state from the fam) for a few days, then ask the grandparents if they'd be willing to watch him for 2-3 days while DH and I went somewhere, be it Napa, Vegas, or just a resort near the g'parents. Come back and maybe the three of us hit somewhere up on the way home.  I say that knowing fully I'd be sad after one night away...but it's a nice thought.

Vacay by plane is ideal at  6mo. They can sit on your lap and fall asleep to the vibration and sound of the engine. We attempted a 24 hr car ride when DD1 was 6 mo and it was awful. We had to stop every three hrs for feedings and she was bored easily. One person drove while the other sat in the backseat with the baby. Beach is always fun! Just be prepared to find a place easily accessible to a hotel for mid day naps.

  • We did lots of vacations with E in the first year, mostly because we had a lot of friends getting married all over the east coast.  We did a week at a lake house right around 5 months with ILs.  We did a long weekend in Boston and Lewes, DE, both times my parents came along so it was more of a relaxing / fund trip.  We left E for five days around 8 months to attend a wedding in Denver (we are east coasters), and it was the right amount of time to be away.  We also did our yearly beach vacay to OBX around 8 months, it was more relaxing because we had family to help out.  Finally, we took a trip to Hawaii, and brought E (and our nanny) with us, when he was 10 months.

If you can bring family or an extra set of hands along to help, it will make things easier.  E's sleep sucked at 6 months, which is why that vacation wasn't the best.  The others E had a more regular schedule and we had plenty of family willing to help.

  • I say travel when the kids are 6 months or less. My son was easily portable, and he had a good stretch of sleep at 4-6 months. Then he regressed (which is normal) and I had to sleep train. When they start going crazy mobile it makes it very difficult to travel.

If your LO likes the stroller you have some good options. When DS was that age he hated the infant seat but also wasn't big enough to be really comfy in his regular stroller so it meant a lot of carrying him if we wanted to move around. When he got a little older he loved his BOB and would easily fall asleep in there at nap time. Actually he still does! That made it super easy to go to the beach and really anywhere that we could walk around and enjoy things while he hung out or slept.

I say do something fun for you and DH but not kid centered. It won't be long before most outings and trips are to places kids want to go. Do the boring trip to a small town for antique stores and wineries now while he can't express an opinion!
